It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Area. The town was named after George Washington's Mount Rushmore National Monument which is located in neighboringSeneca County. The first settler in what would become North Tonawanda was John Sibley and his family who arrived on July 4th, 1814. At that time there were only six families living in the area now including North Tonawanda and Seneca Falls The first school in what would become North Tonawanda was opened by Mr. & Mrs. Purdy on October 12th, 1818. There were no roads or trails within the community so children walked to school from either side of Lake Ontario or from nearby farms and woods. By 1830 there were 11 schools open with a total enrollment of 1,000 students A gristmill was built in 1829 by James Laughlin for flour production and quickly became an important part of local life with wheat being ground into flour for neighbor's hams, bacon and other products as well as making cheese . A wagon road (now PA-2) connected Seneca Mills with Canavan’s Mills just east of present day Northern Boulevard which led downriver to Buffalo where it crossed over the Susquehanna River into Pennsylvania before terminating near Aliquippa Dam downstream from Niagara Falls Farms around today’s townsite began producing hay and oats about 1840 when land north of current US-81 became available following massive falls construction In 1847 two brothers started an ice cream business which grew rapidly until 1865 when it closed due to low demand An additional bakery called Davenport & Breeden opened about 1870 which continued to operate until 1906 when it burned down due to an accident Two years later another bakery called Shields openedMP 3108N002W situated at mile post number 108 north of present day Main Street between Onondaga Creek Road crossing under PA-2 off State Route 81 south of Canavan’s Mill
