North Tonawanda is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 5,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tonawanda" means "place where the water comes out."
The first settler in what would become North Tonawanda was Nicholas Moreland in 1814. In 1825, John Kieft bought land from Nicholas Moreland and built his home on it. He named his settlement after his father-in-law's native country—the Netherlands—called Hollandia (nowadays Rotterdam). In 1830, General George Armstrong Custer arrived in the area and founded the village of North Tonawanda on his farm north of present dayUtica.
In 1839–40, local farmers met to form a cooperative society to raise hay for export to Great Britain. The village became known as North Tonawanda because of this event. On December 1st 1840, residents voted to change its name to Tonawanandamania after Major General David Hunter's visit that year; it was accepted by the Board of Supervisors on January 2nd 1841.
On May 10th 1861, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech at Peekskill Military Academy which helped motivate settlers to move westward into what is now upstate New York based on their perception that war with Mexico was impending and new markets were waiting for them there.

North Tonawanda was a small town in the Adirondacks of upstate New York, located about 20 miles north of Albany. It is now part of the town of Schenectady and the village of North Tonawanda. The first European to settle in what is now North Tonawanda was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived in 1624. He built a cabin on his property which became the nucleus for what would become the town. Wheat farming was the predominant economic activity until 1865, when textiles became an important factor in local economy. A mill was built around 1875 and flour production continued until 1965; however, it closed down due to competition from other mills in Schenectady and Albany. The first post office at North Tonawanda opened on October 15, 1857; it was called "Hendrickson." In 1865, the name changed to "Tonawanda." The first elected official at North Tonawanda was Joel Hasting (1814-1886), a Democrat who served as Town Clerk from 1862 to 1868 and Postmaster from 1863 to 1865. In 1870-71, construction began on a canal that would connect Lake Ontario with Susquehanna River; this project ultimately failed because of lack of funding. In 1876-77, local boys developed an invention which allowed them to produce cotton without havingto leave their homes: this innovation became known as “the Cotton Gin”. Cornelius Holland (1797-1860) conducted some early business activities at North Tonawanda including lumbering and selling eggs at local farmers markets.
