North Tonawanda was settled by Dutch and German immigrants in 1788. The first schools were established in 1802 and 1824, respectively. In 1837, the post office was founded here and has been in operation since then. North Tonawanda was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1868. The main industry of North Tonawanda until the 1970s was agriculture; however, this has changed with the emergence of new businesses such as processing mills and manufacturing companies involved in textiles, food processing, plastics and energy production. Some current businesses include: Waffle House/Diner (since 1965), Kipling Plaza (since 1971), Eveready Depot (since 1984), Paper Kiosks (1970-present), Jack Daniels Distillery (since 1990) and Aquaphor Headquarters (2006). In 2006, construction began on what would become known as "The Gateway" project which will see an addition to the town center including a large shopping mall with over 100 stores including Sears Holdings Holdings Corporation's Sears department store closed to customers starting in 2013 while also adding another 20 acres of parkland to be used for sports stadiums/parks etc., additional housing development as well as 500 jobs surrounding it creating about 4500 total jobs across all aspects of economic development within the soon-to-be developed area dubbed "The Gateway".

The first general store in North Tonawanda was established in 1875. By 1890, there were seven churches in the town with an attendance of about 150 people each. In 1910, there were 14 businesses in the town with a total payroll of $871 dollars.
