North Tonawanda is a small town in the town of Tonawanda, New York, United States. The population was 5,402 at the 2010 census. North Tonawanda is within the Niagara River watershed and it is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now North Tonawanda was Dutchman Michiel Pauw in 1614 when he charted out Lake Ontario as part of his explorations for fur traders. German explorer Johann Friedrich Bischofswerth also invaded this area in 1637 and named both lakes after himself – Schaeffer-Lacrosse (now Niagara) and Lauenburg (now Latham). In 1764, French explorer Sieur de la Salle visited this area on his trip up the Niagara River which became known as La Salle's Expedition. French traders soon began trading with Native Americans here and by 1800 there were over eighty French Catholic missionaries living in North Tonawanda. The first school in these parts opened in 1804 by Rev. John Fenton using materials salvaged from an old fort on Sylvan Lake that had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. In 1830, North Tonawanda became one of twelve towns erected along the Erie Canal; during its construction many people relocated to this new community because of its opportunities for job development and its proximity to Buffalo and other major cities. This period marked a time of great growth for North Tonawandans as they experienced dramatic changes including advances in transportation, communication, industry, medicine, education and architecture all made here at various points throughout their history. During World War II much activity took place here at Fort Erie Naval Station including production of munitions such as naval ordnance and aircraft construction; however very few residents actually served in wartime due to military service being centered around Buffalo instead. Instead most locals did their patriotic duty serving their local communities either through labor or volunteerism during hostilities that included some horrendous events such as the burning down of homes and businesses during fighting near Pearl Harbor resulting in more than 50 percent loss of life among civilians - an event which still has not been fully realized thirty years later! In recent years NorthTonawa has seen significant redevelopment taking place with several new businesses opening up while also experiencing increased traffic congestion caused by increasing numbers of students attending nearby universities like Fordham University and SUNY Oswego making this small town even more difficult to live Dobworthy style!

The town of North Tonawanda was first settled in 1795 by colonists from Connecticut. The town burned in 1814, but was re-established the following year. It became a borough of Buffalo on January 1, 1902. On October 15, 1924, the borough was merged with the city of Buffalo to form the present day City of Buffalo.
