North Tonawanda is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. North Tonawanda is located on the border of Wyoming and Ontario counties. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Niagara County were French fur traders from Quebec in 1664. They named the area "Tonawanda" after the Iroquois word for "a place where two rivers meet". The Dutchman Hendrick Corstiaensen and his family arrived in 1714 and named their settlement "Onderwijsgebied" (meaning 'underway land'). The first permanent settlers came from Sweden in 1736, when they founded the village of Västerås on the left bank of the Susquehanna River just north of present-day North Tonawanda. In 1857, Yatesville and East Aurora were added to Cohoes Borough; these villages had been established as farming communities during previous decades but attained city status because their populations exceeded 1,000 residents by 1860. However, despite its growth as an agricultural center over time – with a corn crib dating back to 1793 still standing today near downtown Cohoes – no municipal boundaries existed for North Tonawanda until 1907 when it became part of Lockport Township following a merger between Yatesville and East Aurora municipalities. The town's name originated with its location at an intersection of two major waterways: One flowed eastward through present-day Wyoming Township while another flowed westward through present-day Ontario County before converging near future North Tonawanda; this duality has led some locals to refer to their town as "Two Rivers Town." The first European to visit what is now North Tonawanda was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sighted the Niagara River from Lake Ontario on his way up the Canadian side in 1524. In 1795 purchase was made by John Tryon of Rochester, New York from Nicholas Percival for $1,000 for 7 square miles (18 km²). Tryon named it for General James Clinton who had led him and others in successful raids against Native Americans during the French and Indian War (1754-63). During World War II North Tonawanda played an important role as a dumping ground for American munitions that were used by Germany during World War II. The townsfolk joined with locals in Buffalo and Niagara Falls to create "The United States Munitions Disposal Association" which collected munitions that were then dumped into Arthur Kill near North Tonawandanskirkiehills Millrace that eventually became one of Niagara's most polluted waterways. In 1960 Republican Congressman Edward Messel moved to North Tonawanda from Utica after winning a special election there to fill the seat formerly held by Democrat Mayor Archibald MacLeish. He represented parts of Western New York until his death in 1987; he had been a favorite son of Utica's mayor Dewey Shearman and also served on several committees including those responsible for developingUtica's downtown area into one of Americaslargest pedestrian malls.

The North Tonawanda region in New York is one of the oldest parts of the United States. The area was first settled by Native Americans and then became part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. After the British took over New Netherland in 1664, they began toghanter people from upstate. However, during the American Civil War many residents fled to Canada becauseof fear of war and lack of food supplies. In 1872, following the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction in America,North Tonawanda was annexed by Rochester County as part as a result of statehood laws passed at that time. Today's economy is based largely on agriculture with some manufacturing operations also located in this area including paper products and clothing products
