On January 25th, 1787, two days after George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States, representatives from various towns met together at Canalside Park in order to discuss forming an alliance with Boston against Great Britain. It is interesting to note that these meetings were not open to public observation which suggests that there may have been some behind-the-scenes talks taking place between townsfolk concerning potential cooperation should hostilities break out.(1) After approximately two weeks of deliberations itwas decided that Syracuse would be given preference since its population size made it an ideal location for an army garrison while Niagara Falls should serve as “a sort[ing] house” for goods arriving from Canada.(2) On February 3rd itwas announced that Albany would join forces with Montreal also receiving preference because its troops had recently served under General Howe during his successful campaign against Quebec.(3) On March 15th itwas decided unanimously that Buffalo would become an integral part of newly formed New York state(4). North Tonawanda, NY is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 9,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-Schenectady Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Tonawanda was established in 1836 by hatters and millers who arrived from Connecticut and other parts of New York State. The name may be derived from the Susquehanna River. The first settler in what is now North Tonawanda was Nicholas Jorgensen (1795–1851). Jorgensen and his family started to live in what is now North Tonawanda on a piece of land bought by Major John Schermerhorn from Abram de Witt about 1822. The first school in the town was built on some property purchased by Schermerhorn in 1827. A post office called North Tonawanda had been established in 1831, but it did not operate until 1841 when it was moved to its present location south of Center Street and east of Main Street. In 1850, David Wadsworth came to the area around North Tonawanda and founded Wadsworth Place near where Main Street meets Center Street. In 1861, Amos Prentice became the first white man to purchase land north of Center Street from David Wadsworth for $1 per acre In 1865, Abraham Lincoln buried his father at Misery Cemetery northeast of town near present day Elmira Road/Route 10 East. Mr Lincoln's remains were later interred there with those of many other early settlers including General James Grant and Colonel Oliver Hazard Perry On February 15th 1870 Western Union Telegraph Company wired President Ulysses S Grant “It has been my great fortune to live within easy reach of your Government while I am alive; I should very much like it if you would allow me also to bury my dead here” Unknown gentleman buried President Ulysses S Grant near current day White Plains Bridge The first post office opened at NorthTonawa on October 2nd 1840 under the name Ofenheim after Johann Gottfried Ofenheim who donated land for a new academy at Amherstburg that eventually became Utica University In 1865–1868 two schools were built: one operated by Presbyterian ministers (referred to as "Plymouth Church School") northwest cornerof Maurer Boulevard & West Main Avenue; another operated by members oflocal Quaker community (later known as Friends) southwest cornerof Main Avenue & Plymouth Avenue southeast cornerof Plymouth Avenue just outside present day Wheatley Road between Elmira Road/Route 10 East & Route 12West Northeast cornerof Maplehurst Ave./Route 8 south sidejust inside Present Day Dutchtown Rd., minutes before end of hostilities with British troops during American Revolution

The first settlement in what is now North Tonawanda was established by Dutch colonists in 1664. In 1714, the British burned all of the local villages except for North Tonawanda because they thought the natives were using trade goods to build military caches elsewhere. In 1803, part of Niagara County became Ontario County and North Tonawanda lost its status as a village when that county was disbanded. The community's only school opened in 1896 and closed in 1960; however, there are remnants of two churches dating back to 1802 that still serve as both schools. The town started prospering after it was connected to Buffalo through an electric line in 1913. At that time, Buffalo was experiencing rapid growth and North Tonawanda had limited opportunities to participate because it lacked infrastructure such as roads or sewers. However, over time NorthTonawa has slowly become more prosperous due to its location near major highways and its access to education and business opportunities
