"The village site lay on what is now South Avenue between Second Street and Third Street just west of present-day Elmira." One theory suggests that this location because it had good water sources which could be tapped easily by villagers without having to go too far away from civilization while another theory suggests that this spot would have been ideal since it had plenty of trees around it so people could build homes without worrying about being able to get services like transportation or electricity if they needed them." "In 1825 German settlers founded two tents colony northwest today’s North Tonawanda just north of where First Presbyterian Church stands today…. According to legend, General John Peter tonawarra set out marching down South Avenue towards Nanticoke when he met an Indian woman walking her dog – she told him her home was directly across the river from where he was standing! From this initial encounter we can assume that either general knew about rivers very well or he simply found this area attractive due its natural surroundings! This story likely helped convince many frontier Americans back then that Native Americans didn't pose any threat worthy enough to warrant their investment! On October 15, 1795, the town of North Tonawanda was chartered by the New York State Legislature. The first village in this area was Lockport, which was platted in 1798. The name of the town is derived from the Tonawanda River. In 1802, a post office was established at North Tonawanda and continued to be operated until it closed on July 1, 1902. In 1814-1815, an act was passed to establish a school for boys in North Tonawanda. This school continued to operate until it closed on December 15, 1865. The first woman to teach in North Tonawanda Elementary School was Miss Anna Fenton who taught from 1829-1830. In 1842-1843 Mrs Rebecca Morse served as teacher for one year before she resigned because of ill health. In 1850-1851 Mrs Sarah Landon served as teacher for one year before she resigned because of illness and also due to conflict with her husband John Morse who also worked at the school at that time
