North Tonawanda is well known for its annual Apple Festival, which takes place in late September and early October. The village plat for what would later become North Tonawanda was filed on November 18, 1827 by Moses Brown and James McGee. The name "Tonawanda" was first applied to the area by General John Armstrong in 1795 when he called it "the land of their enemies." In 1830, Joshua Chamberlain donated land to the village for $1 per acre (0.40 km²). That same year, Alexander Bain donated another piece of property for $2 per acre (0.60 km²). The village had its first public meeting on December 6, 1830 under the presidency of David Fenton. On January 1, 1831, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech at a fairgrounds near the present-day Walmart Supercenter in North Tonawanda Township; it has been said that this speech helped spur development around the area and led to more people coming to live in North Tonawandana than any other town before or since. In 1865 local residents organized a group to fight against efforts by American engineers who were building fortifications along Canada's border with Mexico; this fight is also known as the Battle of Canisteo Heights. On October 5th 1861 local resident Elijah Howe killed two American soldiers after they invaded his home from behind while he slept; Howe's act became one of America's most famous acts of terrorism and led to increased vigilance against such attacks from locals ever since. North Tonawanda, New York is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the late 18th century and became a part of Erie County when that county was created on January 1, 1768. It remained within Erie County until it became Niagara County on February 14, 1950. North Tonawanda is one of the oldest towns in New York State and has been home to a variety of industries including shoe manufacturing and paper making since its inception. The name "Tonawanda" comes from the Iroquois word "tonto" meaning "a tall tree." The first recorded settlers were Scots-Irish Presbyterians who arrived around 1790. They named their new settlement after General George Washington as an appreciation for his role in suppressing Native American attacks on settlements west of the falls during the French and Indian War (1754-63). In 1836, local farmers decided to build a flour mill on Niagara Creek because they could not find any other place to get flour for their mills in western Buffalo Township. When those same farmers started producing wheat instead of flour, they changed their name to North Tonawanda so people would know where their product came from. By 1860, many residents had moved away or died from disease brought over by illegal immigration from Ireland during the potato famine years there; however, some small groups of Irish speakers still lingered and continued to operate businesses such as grocery stores in North Tonawanda until about 1940s when all operations stopped due to rising prices for agricultural produce caused by World War II bombings and shortages across Buffalo Township.. In 1949 North Tonawanda united with neighboring South Tonawanda to form what is now known as Niagara Falls City School District No.-1 which operates both schools together today!
The area now known as North Tonawanda was settled by the Mohawk people in the early 17th century. The region became part of the British colony of New York after its acquisition from Spain in 1664. It remained under British rule until 1795, when it became a part of the United States. North Tonawanda is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Niagara County, New York, United States.
