In 1836, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented a design for a hat that would protect against the elements. The hat became known as the "Conte Hat." By 1850, over 1,000 hats had been made and sold in North Tonawanda. The Conte Hat was influential in helping to popularize firearms in New York State and across the United States. It is still worn by many people today.

The village of North Tonawanda was founded in 1853 by Dutch settlers on land that had been given to them by the Iroquois Confederacy for their use as an agricultural reserve. In 1892, following the establishment of Niagara Falls National Park, North Tonawanda became a part of that park and its successor agencies including Niagara Falls State Park and Niagara Gorge National Recreation Area. In spite of being a small village with few schools, North Tonawanda has continued to be an important center for commerce in western Erie County through its involvement in retail trade (e.g., grocery stores, hardware stores), professional services (lawyers, doctors), manufacturing (foundry products), transportation (convenience store/Gas station). Many businesses have also closed within recent years but many others remain active including: PNC Bank; Mohawk Casino Resort & Spa; Shaw's Supermarket; and Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Company which opened a new restaurant inside the former Empire Furniture Store building in 2013. Today', tourism remains an important economic driver for NorthTonawa with major attractions including hiking/biking trails along the Susquehanna River and wildflower-filled hills overlookingNiagara Falls; while much city life takes place around Buffalos Stadium Sports Arena which hosts local high school sports events as well as concerts from time to time throughout the year.

North Tonawanda, New York is a small town in upstate New York that straddles the border of Niagara County and Ontario County. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. North Tonawanda is one of several villages in Niagara County and the larger town of Tonawanda City in Ontario County which are part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was laid out by Andrew Miller in 1824 as a stop on the Erie Canal. It became a small farming community with few residents until after World War II when large numbers of immigrants arrived from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and other parts of Eastern Europe. These newcomers founded businesses and increased production in local mills while also creating jobs for natives. Afterward many residents moved away to suburban neighborhoods elsewhere in Niagara County or Ontario County because they could no longer support high school students who returned home to teach classes and do research for their college degrees. In recent years North Tonawanda has seen a rebirth as an artsy enclave with some interesting shops, galleries and restaurants located near its central square where artisans sell their products such as textiles, ceramics, glassware and jewelry. The cluster around this square produce occasional festivals featuring traditional crafts from throughout New York State as well as new works from local artists that are seldom seen outside of NorthTonawa during regular periods like summertime when people go to spend time outdoors. Although best known for its charming countryside setting it is also home to important industrial sites dating back to early 19th century when iron ore mining began here followed by manufacturing plants including two Paper Mill Companies which closed down during the 1960s but have been resurrected over the last decade or so as cultural destinations providing tours for groups interested in exploring these old buildings along with demonstrations by local history enthusiasts explaining how these companies functioned back then.
The town of North Tonawanda was founded in 1825 by Ichabod Crane and his family. The town was named after the Tonawanda River, which flows through it. The population of North Tonawanda peaked at 20,000 in the early 1800s, but decreased to 10,000 by 1860. After the American Civil War, the population of North Tonawanda increased to 30,000 in 1870. However, this number decreased again by 1900. In 1925, the town was renamed after Ichabod Crane himself.
