North Tonawanda was an incorporated village in the town of Tonawanda, Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Rochester–on-Hudson metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now North Tonawanda was made on April 12, 1814 by Alexander Davidson and his family from Canada. They arrived on a small boat called "Osprey". The following year, they purchased land from Jacob Koch. In 1825, North Tonawanda became a post office with Averill Dearing as its first director. In 1829 it had a population of 348 people. On December 8, 1830, North Tonawanda became the latest town in Monroe County when it was created from parts of Auburn and Rometowns east of Wayside Lake (now within Rochester). At that time there were only three other towns in Monroe County: Rometown (southwest of Buffalo), Auburn (northwest of Utica), and Canastota (northeast of Syracuse). An election to establish a school board took place on February 16th 1830 but no ballots were received due to snowdrifts which had covered many doors during the winter months. On March 5th 1830 David Ramsay set up shop in an old tannery near wayside lake to try and collect ballots for the school board election that same day but he failed so he started a paper trade business with two friends named John Hickey and Michael Ryan which continued until May 10th 1830 when both partners died suddenly; their deaths left their businesses bankrupt. This event is known as "the death knell for North Tonawanda." Election results showed that John Hickey won with 35 votes against 3 votes cast by Michael Ryan who came second with 21 votes total; this led to Ramsay's founding of his own paper company which would become one of the most successful businesses in history – Hickey Paper Company – today known as Post master General Corp., Incorporated (). Ramsay also served as Trustee for over 40 years until his retirement in 1979. Michael Ryan went back into business trading goods between Syracuse and Canada until his death on November 13th 1963 at age 95 years old leaving behind an estate valued at $1 million dollars ($ million today). Today's major streets leading into NorthTonawa are named after him including: Ruxton Road/Route 11 north towards Canastota Road/Route 17 south-east towards Orchard Rd./ Route 22 west-northwest along present-day Park Ave./Rochester Blvd./Main St./Wickham Rd./Newburgh Rd.– alluding to his role as pioneer trader & community leader
The town of North Tonawanda was first settled by the Dutch in 1614. The community was later renamed to Tonawanda after General George Washington's home state, New York. The town was incorporated as a village in 1876. In 1898, it became a city and today is the largest city in upstate New York.
