The town of North Tonawanda was founded in 1784 by the Dutch. It was renamed Tonawanda in 1802 after General George Washington, who had settled in the area. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of about 1,500 people. In 1834, the village of North Tonawanda proper was completed and it became the town's seat. The first school in North Tonawanda was built in 1835. In 1855, the new state of New York was formed and North Tonawanda became part of it. The town continued to grow and by 1860 its population had reached 8,000 people. In 1865, the first post office was established in NorthTonawa; it remained open until 1902. In 1916, the United States entered World War I and North Tonawanda enlisted in the war effort. Its military branch was called Company C (the "Tonawa Tigers"). After the war ended, many soldiers returned toNorthTonawa; however, some stayed and started businesses such as a grocery store and an auto dealership. In 1925, when New York Statehood came into effect,NorthTonawa became one of its first towns on Long Island. In 1962, due to economic problems within the community caused by high levels of crime rates and low incomes among its citizens, NorthTonawa voters passed a resolution asking for annexation by Syracuse University'stownsite; this request went unheeded but never stopped being made thereafter despite protests from local residents). On July 16th 1969 NorthernNewYork attained independent statehood as per article IVsection 3ofthe New York Constitution with boundaries defined as follows: "The Town ofNorth Tonawanda is located east-northeast corner line OfLong Island County And Is Included Within The Limits OfThe City Of Syracuse".
