North Tonawanda is a small town in the Adirondacks of New York State. It was first settled by Dutch farmers in the early 17th century and became part of the United States in 1821. In 1624 Major John Smith discovered what may have been the first European settlement in what is now North Tonawanda when he explored and charted the eastern border of present-day New York state on his journey from Albany to Quebec City. He named this spot after his friend, General Nicholas Fenton Butler, who had led British forces against the French at Fort Niagara earlier that year. In 1701 John Clapp bought land east of present-day North Tonawanda from local Abenaki tribe leaders for £500 sterling. This land became known as Clapp's Purchase because it was given to him by Colonel Jameson Livingston (1727–1810), one of George Washington's colleagues on hisMap Room staff during the American Revolution. In 1800 Ebenezer Strong organized a group of nine men to purchase three hundred acres (110 hectares) east of present-day North Tonawanda from Loyalist colonists near Kingston for £250 sterling each; these settlers were referred to as "the Patriot Boys." These purchases followed soon thereafter a series of Indian Wars fought between white settlers and Native Americans including several bouts of warfare that took place along what is now Route 9 north of North Tonawanda between 1790 and 1802 totaling more than thirty engagements reported by colonial newspapers such as The Gazetteer . It should be noted that not all Europeans who settled in this area called themselves patriots or "the Patriots." Many members of families such as those represented by Strong participated actively or passively in British Crown Colonies up until about 1775 when they began Resistances against Great Britain through open rebellion under William Howe following King George III's proclamation calling for all males over sixteen years old residing within Crown Colonies subject to military service to be drafted into uniform and serve abroad rather than farming or trading away their country livings while under British rule.; however many others embodied some aspectiety or attitude towards independence similar to those displayed by John Rogers whose father had also immigrated there circa 1700 .
