North Tonawanda, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. North Tonawanda is located on the border of Monroe County and Ontario County. It lies north of Syracuse and east of Buffalo. The town was founded in 1825 by Germans from Hanover who had come to settle around what is now North Tonawanda Lake. The first settler, Johann Friedrich Bauer, built a log cabin on land he had acquired from the local Mohawk tribe. In 1829, German-born Nicholas Kolb purchased land in what is now North Tonawanda from John Ahern for $1 per acre. Kolb named his new community "North Tonawanda". In 1892, a post office was established in North Tonawanda with Jens Wessel as the first Postmaster. Wessel operated the post office until it closed in 1893 due to lack of mail flow during the 19th century. After World War II, many Japanese Americans were moved to towns west of Buffalo such as Buffalo and Niagara Falls because they were interned during the war without trial or habeas corpus rights (they were not considered citizens). When their homes were confiscated following World War II, many Japanese Americans made efforts to move back into their own homes in northeastern New York but found that they could not do so since most homes had been destroyed or taken over by authorities after the war ended. In 1957, North Tonawanda became part of the newly formed Town of Monroe when it merged with other villages within Monroe County including Baldwinsville and Cazenovia near Rochester. The merger resulted in an increase in population as people living outside of those villages started moving into NorthTonawa due to its close proximity to jobs and educational opportunities inside Monroe County. After years of growth and development within NorthTonawa village limits paralleling that seen outside its borders, residents voted unanimously to incorporate as an unincorporated village on July 1st 2009 under name "NorthTonawa" with full powers granted by state law which allowed for full governing autonomy including responsibility for all aspects such as police force & fire protection; zoning; school district; elections; economic development; trash disposal; waste management & stormwater management.; Today's populace number nearly 2200 people making NorthTonawa one of Erie County's fastest growing communities

However, during this time period several challenges faced the village: 1) It was often at odds with other settlements due to its location on an important trade route; 2) The colonists were struggling financially; 3) There was little support from government officials; 4) And finally 5) The population size grew too large for traditional means of communication and transportation -thus inhibiting growth). Nonetheless, through hard work and determination, North Tonawanda persevered over these challenges and soon became one of Niagara Falls' most prosperous communities. By 1907, the village had acquired boasted a library (the first such facility in upstate New York), three churches (one built specifically for religious services), a school (established in 1892), two factories (a cement plant and a brewery), six farmssteads/campsites/villages (including five erected between 1895-1900), twenty-six businesses (ranging from hardware stores to grocery stores), five churches (including two built specifically for religious services), sixteen residences(including ten erected between 1895-1900), twenty-six workers' dwellings( eighteen constructed between 1895-1900), four cottages/houses for students at Stonington College(established in 1888 as part of Niagara University ), seven businesses catering to residents within walking distance of their homes - thirty enterprises altogether -and two public works contractors providing essential infrastructure such as roadsides paved with lime or brick
North Tonawanda was one of the original towns in what is now upstate New York. A post office was established at North Tonawanda in 1811, and remained in operation until 1865. The town was named for the Tonawanda River, which flows through it.
