In 1825, General George Washington ordered Major-General Anthony Wayne to take control of Indian Affairs in New York due to concerns about Native American raids into other states. Wayne built Fort Erie at Niagara Point on Ontario’s eastern shoreline in 1827 as part of his efforts to secure passage through Lake Ontario for soldiers transporting supplies back and forth between Canada and America during the War of 1812 (the war was fought by Great Britain against America). The fort served as a trading post until it was destroyed by fire in 1837. In 1848, Congress authorized construction of several dams along the river below Fort Erie which would create reservoirs for irrigation purposes (the original purpose behind these dams remains a mystery). The first dam was completed upstream from present-day Buffalo Bayou on July 8,1849; however, it failed because its wallowing water caused great problems with navigation downstream. Work began on another dam downstream from present-day White Sands Lake on October 14th but this too failed due to faulty engineering design and construction materials used by engineers working under order from President James K Polk (who had been elected president two years earlier). After spending $39 million dollars ($274 million today) trying unsuccessfully to build three separate dams across Buffalo Bayou over seven years (!), workers finally succeeded downstream at this new dam called Mulberry Dam on January 3rd,1905 following erection of a 522 foot tall temporary bridge above White Sands Lake just prior to its completion! This new dam created Notch Creek which flows into Buffalo Bayou directly from Lake Erie formerly known as Upper defence creek! The final product of this project was one of the most impressive engineering feats ever undertaken – one that provided both electricity for homes and industry northward along Main Street within blocks of where it stood! Today visitors can enjoy hours spent touring around this awe-inspiring landmark without having any trouble getting past those pesky barriers set up upstream!
