One of the earliest knives in Niagara Falls was a Native American knife used for hunting and fishing. The first European to arrive in the area, John Colgan, acquired a piece of land near Niagara Falls in 1693. He named his new property Lake George after King George III of England. In 1764, French fur trader Pierre-Jean de La Salle discovered and explored the falls, which led to its moniker as the "Falls of Niagara." By 1825, the village had grown around the falls and became known asNiagara Falls. In 1814, United States Army General Winfield Scott captured Fort Erie on Ontario's western border during the War of 1812. The fort served as a military garrison until it was surrendered on September 15th, 1814. After being sacked by British forces and losing many soldiers, Fort Erie was abandoned and its cannons were removed sometime between December 1st and January 5thastioning that they could not be used against American troops once they recaptured the fort. The remains of Fort Erie are now located at Lockport State Park in Lockport Township (northwest corner of County Highway 12). In 1886 Buffalo developer James Waddell bought an acre lot adjacent to lockyards at Niagara Falls for $2 per year from Colonel Augustus Haughton. Waddell began developing what is now Buffalo Creek into what would become one of North America's most important industrial areas due to its proximity to water supplies and manufacturing plants such as those operated by Phelps Dodge Company at Lackawanna Bridge over Buffalo Creek; Bethlehem Steel Corporation at Oneonta; Republic Iron & Metal Works at Montrose; American Can Manufacturing Company at East Aurora; Malcomson Paper Products Company at Seneca Falls; Central Electric Power Cooperative at Logansport; DuPont Rubber Co., formerly Alcoa Aluminum Lumber Co.; Phelps Dodge Company's Antrim Shoe Factory downstream fromthe falls but within walking distanceofWaddell's Development); automatic teller machines (ATMs)were also developed hereat this timeand remain some of North America's most popular tourist attractions today
The Niagara Falls are a series of waterfalls located in the town of Niagara on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. The falls are about 190 feet (50 meters) wide at their widest point and drop more than 80 feet (25 meters) over a distance of more than 20 miles (32 kilometers). They are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, with around 150 million visitors annually. The falls have been visited by humans for over 12,000 years, likely first coming across them on horseback or on foot as they passed through what is nowNiagara Falls National Park. The first Europeans to visit were French traders in the late 17th century who named the falls after King John's sister, Lady Jane Grey. The British built a fort at present-day Lewiston Heights during the Indian War of 1814–1815 to protect settlers from Native American attacks. In 1845, construction began on Fort Erie which became operational in 1847. By 1860, both Fort Erie and Lewiston Heights had been abandoned and all remaining structures were destroyed by an avalanche that swept down the Niagara Escarpment during winter months. During World War II, aerial bombing raids against Germany caused extensive damage to both Fort Erie andLewiston Heights; however, only Fort Erie was completely destroyed by a fire that burned for days following an air raid on December 15th 1945. Afterward, parts ofFort Erie were reconstructed as barracks for Canada's Army Medical Corps and later became home to Canadarmy National Museum; while Lewiston Heights remains a ruin today but is open to visitation from May 1-October 31st each year during free admission hours. Today's view from either side ofthe falls can be seen from many locations within Niagra Falls National Park including several viewpoints near where both fortifications once stood as well as direct views from along US- Conservation road 6A which crosses between Goat Island and Upper Loup Rapids nationalist park before continuing upstream towards old mill complex housing development called "The Gorge" just past current day exit #5 off highway 5A beside current day dam access road known locally as "Old Mill Road".
