Niagara Falls is a Gorge in Niagara County, New York. The falls are located on the Erie Canal and stretch for over 150 feet (45 m). The name "Niagara" comes from the Iroquois word "nag-a-hawa," meaning "to fall." The Haldimand River flows along the south side of the falls, while the Ontario River flows along its north side. The falls were first mentioned by Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he wrote about a large rapids called Cani d'Orion that flow down to the river below. At 1 million tons (1,000 t), Niagara Falls was America's largest commercial waterfall at that time. In 1922, when Interstate 69 was built through central New York State, part of it bypassed Niagara Falls by crossing under Lake Ontario near where today's Canadian Highway 13 crosses over the falls; this made for an improved view for drivers travelling between Buffalo and Toronto on I-69. On July 25th 2007, Canada Post announced that they would be demolishing all but one of their old post office buildings in downtown Niagara Falls as part of a program to save money during economic recession; however some of these buildings remain standing as tourist attractions today.
