Newburgh is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,953 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County. The first permanent settler in what would become Newburgh was Nicholas Hargrave in 1776. He and his family founded the town on the east bank of the Hudson River, near present-day Albany. Hargrave named it after his home village of Newburgh in Scotland. His grandson, also Nicholas Hargrave, donated land to make up the town's wide central square and its two blocks of buildings surrounding it. In 1824, John Aiken bought much of Nicholas' land and renamed it "Newburgh" after himself. During the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), General George Washington visited Newburgh twice while commanding troops against British forces occupying Manhattan and Hyde Park on Long Island; both visits were commemorated by erecting markers at nearby Albany's George Washington Bridge (now part of I-787). In 1814, when Daniel Webster became Ulysses S. Grant's running mate on the national ticket as a Democrat against incumbent Federalist Jonathan Edwards, many people within Newburgh voted for Grant because he had opposed Webster's previous run for office as a Republican four years earlier during that party's nomination campaign against then-President James K Polk II (1841-1845). After becoming president in 1849—the first Roman Catholic Ulysses S. Grant—Newburgh grew rapidly as an agricultural center with extensive production of cornmeal and other products relevant to local markets across America.
