This led to increased competition for farmlands within city limits as well as outside them due to new shipping routes opening up across Lake Ontario thanks largely to improvements made by Andrew Jackson at his presidency (the Erie Canal). At this time also saw dramatic changes both inside and outside the traditional community characterizing rural life within metropolitan areas: cars were not unknown or unheard of yet; people worked their farms instead providing services such as street cleaning or lawn care; housespun clothes were now becoming more popular than overalls among working class Americans; schools began appearing all over American cities but especially so in big urban centers like Chicago or Boston where wealthy families could send their children into boarding school starting at age 7 or 8 years old

The first courthouse in Newburgh was built in 1768 on Market Street. It burned down in 1805, but a new courthouse was built on Eighth Avenue between Clinton and Pearl Streets in 1811. The old courthouse remained standing until it collapsed during renovations in 1916. In 1830, the Erie Canal crossed through Newburgh and several businesses were established along its route. One such business was the Johnstown Lumber Company which operated from 1830 to 1865 at what is now Park Place East near Ninth Street. The post office at 5 Broadwalk located on Main Street served as the town's main mail center for over 50 years before being moved to Canadian Hall on Third Avenue in 1957.
