The Newburgh Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1881. The club enjoyed a long history of shooting with its first shotgun tournament taking place in 1885. In 1911, the NRA began sponsoring championships for handguns and shotguns which continues to this day. Newburgh Rifle and Pistol Club members were among the first to adopt ear protection devices such as face masks in the 1920s. The club has also played an important role in developing firearms Laws and regulations including those pertaining to ammunition, silencers, magazine capacity, etc.

The city of Newburgh, New York is home to the largest concentration of shooting range shooters in the United States. The city's Shooting Range Association was founded in 1945 and now boasts over 1,500 members across four divisions: Rifle, Shotguns, Pistol and Airgun. Over the years, the City of Newburgh has developed a rich history of firearm noise protection products. In 1976, Mayor James J. LaValle designated "Newburgh's Sound Barrier" as an official ordinance requiring all businesses with more than 10 employees to install sound walls that would mitigate any potential noise exposure from firearms on their property. A similar ordinance was passed in 1984 by then-Councilman John Kapp and became effective February 1st 1985. In 1998, City Councilwoman Linda Sawaya introduced a resolution recognizing October 15th as "Gun Violence Prevention Month" in order to commemorate the anniversary of Mayor LaValle's original ordinance designating "Newburgh's Sound Barrier". On November 5th 1998, Mayor LaValle presented his annual report on gun violence prevention including findings from his "Sound Barrier" initiative to the City Council which unanimously approved it into law. Since its inception Gun Violence Prevention Month has been celebrated annually throughout Newburgh through both events and public education campaigns; this year marks its 5th Anniversary!
Newburgh is a town in Kings County, New York, United States. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kings County. The borough of Newburgh was established in 1824 and merged into the town in 1851. The area now called Newburgh was first settled by Indianniacs from Vermont. John Winthrop arrived here on October 15, 1685 as part of the Boston Tea Party and took possession of what is now known as Winthrop Hill. He named it after his friend and neighbor, Sir Nicholas Wren, 1st Baronet (1638-1722). After Wren's death in 1722, his son Nicholas took over the landholdings around Newburgh until he sold them to David Levy in 1727 for $2,000 cash. In 1792–93 surveyor George Clinton traveled through this area surveying for a new royal road from Albany to Kingston that would connect with the Provincial Road near Saratoga Springs; he designated within minutes of his arrival at North Fort Plantation where he stopped on January 3rd what became today's Old Northbridge Road (now Route 9) between Greenbush Manor east of present-day downtown Newburgh and West Fort Manor west of present-day downtown Newburgh; this road still forms one side of Broadway which hugs South Hudson River shoreline today Prior to this Revolutionary War activity two small settlements were located on either side or along river banks north past present day Hudson Street between State Street corner to northeast corner lot now occupied by Irontown Mall - one behind Present day First Avenue amassing building fronts older than any other structure on First Avenue built before late 1800s during growth following Wars when many manufacturing plants moved away from cities opening space in old mills Race Street location then south just east off current Main Street since street name changed due to incorporation date 1814 – later known as Third avenue four storey brick building fronting Race Streets current alignment opposite Jameson Park In 1824 John Marshall founded the village of Auburn underlying much larger town plan developed by Captain James Aiken who surveyed and plat their townships including those around NY City limits On December 8th 1830 Village Clerk Thomas Middletown obtained warrants issued under General Order No 2104 Geo Washington authorized him "To obtain information respecting several prospective sites for Schools & Churches" resulting vetoed by Captains Aiken & Livingston notables included Governor Tryon who opposed Christian education move One such site for school mentioned but never actually selected according to document is Northeast corner lot formerly occupied by Our Lady Of Refuge Convent & Hospital lot acquired about 1840 when latter closed down bought for $1M cash By Reverend Dr Elijah Morse personal physician father-in-law Of Benjamin Franklin couplet restored stone wall about 1890 original church property line purchased from convent Purchased Lot 4148 Sqft Lot number inferred form lot size rather than actual purchase price less 6 rods width x 12 rods height above ground lots were originally separated into three lots each more recent rezoning has caused field boundaries generally overlapping so accurate measurement impossible except along lines marked out upon inspection however no evidence exists that Lots numbers assigned are incorrect

Newburgh was first inhabited by the DeWitts in 1686. In 1713, the town was claimed by the Dutch and renamed New Utrecht. The Dutch kept it as a part of their colony until they were expelled in 1727. The British took over from the Dutch in 1732 and renamed it Newburgh after General Jameson, who had helped them win their war against France. It became a part of New York City in 1821. The original courthouse is still standing and is used today as a parlor. It replaced an earlier courthouse that burned down in 1802. The current courthouse was built between 1826 and 1830; it replaced an earlier brick building that was destroyed by a fire in 1824. The cornerstone for the new courthouse was laid on November 3, 1830, just two weeks before New York statehood. Newburgh's downtown area contains several important buildings dating back to its early days: the old jail (built c1812), city hall (built c1825), and three churches (St John’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Second Presbyterian Church). Other notable structures include the Anthony-Lincoln Bank Building (c1911), United States Post Office (1915), State Street Bridge (1917), McCurdy Furniture Company Building (1923), Banner Printing Works Factory Complexes Nos 1-3-5(now demolished) at 246 Union Street NW (c1920s-30s), white limestone Queen Anne style four story factory at 12 Waverly Place NW which housed many local businesses including one famous photographer named Harry Callahan; now known as Picture House Museum ; Third Avenue Baptist Church also located Downtown; Masonic Temple #1 also located Downtown
