Newburgh, New York is home to the oldest municipal shooting range in the United States. The range is located on a bluff overlooking the town and opened in 1871. It was used by local militias to practice gunnery during the American Civil War. In 1922, the Newburgh Municipal Shooting Range Association was formed and began using a more modern facility on Park Avenue. In 1961, it became an affiliate of NRA (National Rifle Association). In 1993, it merged with another NRA-affiliated range, Buffalo Arsenal Range #1, which had been closed for many years. The merger led to the creation of Niagara County Sheriff's Firearms Academy at nearby South Willow Road. The name comes from the Dutch word Nieuwburg meaning "newTown". The first permanent European settlers of what is now Newburgh arrived in 1675 and built a small wooden fort on Manhattan Island. They were followed by more colonists in 1764 and 1768, when the Town of Albany (now Albany County) was created from parts of Nassau and Westchester counties. In 1798, the village of Newtown was established east of present-day Newburgh along the Mohawk River. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces burned down part of Albany's new courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Albany with intention to drive all Native Americans out of that area. That event is also known as Pickering's Rebellion because Major General James Pickering led the British forces that engaged in this act. In 1825, two years after Trustees bought land aroundpresent-day Newburgh for $2 per acre (the equivalent today), they formed a town association which adhered to principles such as open government and equal representation for men and women among its members through election by popular vote rather than appointment or rule by administrators only.
