In 1851, construction began on State Street in downtown Newburgh and soon afterward, it became known as focal point of local commerce. This area continued to be called "Newburgh Square" until after World War II when it changed its name to "The Battery". After World War II, the city of Newburgh experienced a large increase in population growth which caused problems with space at City Hall. In 1954, Mayor John Fenton recommended that new facilities be constructed on Park Avenue between Main and Second Streets which would later become City Hall Annex. With this recommendation, City Hall began expanding its footprint once again and today there are three buildings on that block - City Hall Annex (which houses both Mayor's OFFICE AND CITY LAWYERS OFFICE), First National Bank (which has been Downtown since 1903), and finally The Battery (the first building constructed on Park Avenue). Newburgh is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chenango County and the main town of the incorporated Village of Newburgh. The first permanent settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas Biddle who landed on November 5, 1685 with his family on a small island near present-day Mohawk Lake. He named the land "Newburgh" after his home town of Borough in England. The original village had no buildings and consisted only of a few hundred inhabitants who farmed their lands and traded with other villages around them. On July 11, 1753, James Caldwell purchased from Nicholas Biddle two lots located east of what is now Main Street in what became known as "Old Town". This area included most of present-day downtown Newburgh as well as much of today's south side including Broadwalk Square and State Street. In 1788, John Dickinson established an Academy which became one of the leading institutions in Upstate New York during this time period. In 1814, Uriah Redpath arrived from Vermont and founded Redpath Station onpresent-day State Road 527 about four miles southeast of downtown Newburgh. On October 3 that year he donated 150 acres (60 ha) to the village for use as a public square which would remain its central feature until annexation by neighboring Dutchess County in 1852. By 1830 there were over 1,000 people living in downtown Newburgh and many more dispersed throughout adjacent townships/villages. It wasn't until 1835 that Merchant Tailor Edward Smith opened up his store at 4th & Market Streets which soon became known as "The Daily Telegraph." Soon other retail businesses followed suit such as grocery stores (Fenwick's grocerystore opening up shop right next door), saloons (the old Judge Shaffer mansion becoming Fenwick's general store), theaters (the new National Theatre opening up just off Broadway), post offices (the first post office being built on Main Street), blacksmiths' shops (the first blacksmith shop being built on Third Avenue), dailies (a local paper being published every day beginning with The Freeman newspaper starting publication February 12th 1836) and many more! Downtown business districts were born! This saw Oneonta Township annexing Downtown Newburgh unofficially on October 15th 1870 following a referendum by residents voting 3 to 2 to establish an official city government for all citizens within the township limits not including those residing within Oneonta Township proper - effectively making downtown Newburgh part of Oneonta Township! With rapid growth came social upheaval; prostitution had become rampant due to competition for workers among merchants; landlords started evicting tenants; violence began erupting between men seeking work or protection from crime or women seeking reproductive rights; race riots occurred between African Americans working class residents from outside onentatta Township while white male entrepreneurs benefited greatly from increased trade with both Europe and North America thanks to cheap labor brought over by immigrants - all culminating with World War I when ethnic cleansing began against Armenians living within Ottoman Empire boundaries

Newburgh was a small town in Shiawassee County, Michigan, United States until it became an incorporated city on December 12, 1868. The population of Newburgh was 1,362 at the time of its incorporation. Newburgh's early history can be traced back to 1795 when James Ewing and his family founded the village of Easton in Shiawassee County. In 1814, the Township of Shiawassee was established within Newburgh Township and the village continued to be called Easton. In 1827, the Township of Shiawassee was divided into two parts with Easton becoming part of one new township while Old Easton remained within another new township. In 1839, both townships were combined into one new township which remains named Shiawassee today. On October 15, 1861, Newburgh had a tornado that destroyed most of the town center and killed four people. The tornado is considered to be one of Michigan's deadliesttornadoes. Many stores and businesses were destroyed as well as homes including those belonging to some of the town's founding fathers such as James Ewing and John Dickson. The following year on November 6th saw what is known as "The Day without a Name" due to lack of information about what happened that day or any subsequent days which followed it; this event is also sometimes referred to as simply "the day". This refers specifically to October 15th when much destruction took place but no deaths were reported however local historians still credit this date with being significant in helping spur development in Newburgh over subsequent years despite few tangible results other than rebuilding efforts themselves

The merger created a large municipal government with many programs and services not found in the smaller town government. Today, Newburgh is an important cultural and commercial center for eastern Long Island.
