Newburgh is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 10,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Buffalo– Yonkers Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas Noyes who arrived in 1788. He founded the town on a knoll overlooking the River Seneca and named it after his birthplace, Netherland (now Holland). The town's first school was built in 1793. In 1814, James Purdy moved to Newburgh with his family and began to cultivate land around what is now Main Street. In 1827, he donated land for a public square which became known as Purdy Square. On July 1, 1831, Newburgh became a village under the jurisdiction of the Town of Rochester. In 1865-1867 twoormen were George Waring and Abram Hewitt from Buffalo and they laid out Second Street between Court and Market Streets; Third Street ran east-west between them thence south to Clinton Avenue; Fourth Street ran north-south between them then ended at Fifth Avenue which followed by northwest course to its current terminus opposite First Avenue near Ithaca College (now Ithaca University). Thereafter until about 1870 most development took place along these streets with occasional scattered dwellings being erected on other ridges or hills around the village center providing grazing and agricultural opportunities for large numbers of sheep and pigs while also accommodating some manufacturing activities including tanning operations during summer months when trees could not be grown due to cold weather conditions so that leather would have to be fashioned from animal hides rather than handwoven textiles etc., such as those done by Indians before white settlement started hereabouts but soon abandoned because there was no market for anything made of animal skins outside Iroquois Country where raw materials still came from country bumpkins spinning paper molds making shoes etc., all this while people continued living within limits set by their respective villages/towns until various highways were constructed thruout these areas without villages getting any benefit thereby divorcing themselves from their surrounding communities pretty much overnight creating today's largely unincorporated area bounded by NY Route 9 south (Thruxton Hills), NY Route 22 east (Plymouth), NY Route 8 west (East Amherst) &NY Route 20 north (& South Arlington Heights)) Newburgh has experienced many changes over time: its location behind present day Thruxton Hills has resulted in its growth being closely linked with that of adjoining townships since one cannot walk more than 500 feet away from either side without coming across another township boundary; moreover there are several existing shopping centers located within walking distance both inside & outside of town limits as well as multiple public transportation options available nearby should one wish to travel out into surrounding rural areas or even beyond if desired; nonetheless despite these recent developments there remain several aspects that continue to define this place such as its rich history including Dutch settlers arriving during early 1800’s establishing churches & schools here among others prior thereto along with numerous military engagements taking place throughout both World Wars II fought hereabouts resultant in many businesses & residences moving closer or further away depending upon whether an opportunity arose for business expansion or simply tax base priority Although today much activity takes place mainly within boundaries set forth aboveresidential buildings are few & far between leaving much open space which continues play an important role especially downtown where retail/commercial uses predominate although mixedUse Development Plans are currently being developed herein involving mixed use components appropriate for modern society whereas backcountry usage remains popular particularly among sports enthusiasts who enjoy hunting deer, turkey etc.; nevertheless despite all this change it can still be difficult becoming overwhelmed trying take everything new into account when faced with something new oneself let alone someone else newcomer
