It is the county seat of New York County and the home of both the Erie Canal Museum and Niagara Falls museum. The first European settlement in what is now Newburgh was by French colonists in 1664. The town was founded by George Washington in 1792 as part of Albany County. In 1814, it became part of Erie County and remained so until 1898 when it became one of two counties in New York to be created from parts of Ontario. During Reconstruction era (1865-1913) following Civil War (1861-1865), many Irishmen fled Unionist Ireland for American slavery while others relocated from eastern Long Island Sound to areas such as Buffalo and Syracuse due to poor economic opportunities back home. Many middle-class Northerners followed these immigrants over time as well; this helped lay the groundwork for early civic activism seen throughout much of rural America during this period. This influx also contributed significantly to increasing white populations in central NY since there were few black residents then living outside metropolitan areas like Detroit or Baltimore – let alone rural areas like rural Newburgh where African Americans constituted less than 2% of total population at any point between 1820-1920 The post-WWII boom helped reverse many trends: starting with a Decrease in manufacturing jobs throughout all sectors beginning around 1970 while service jobs increased rapidly; then culminating with a Surge in tourism industry which led to displacement (both permanent & temporary)of numerous native families who lost their homes & access to education & healthcare due to development near airports/motorways etc..
