Newburgh, New York is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 14,436 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in the county and its municipal district. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Orange County was made on October 15, 1614 by Peter Minuit and his men from Amsterdam as part of their survey of the area for a future colony. The settlers were led by Colonel George Monckton who arrived with 350 men on July 10, 1615. The first courthouse was built in 1704 and it served as the seat of justice until 1874 when that function moved to Syracuse. In 1792-93, during the American Revolutionary War, skirmishes took place around Newburgh between Patriot forces and British troops under General John Burgoyne. On September 25 of that year an engagement resulted in one soldier being killed and five wounded; Burgoyne had been seeking an opportunity to cross overland to Canada before he reached Albany where he would be commander-in-chief of all New England army units. On November 2nd (the day after Thanksgiving), a force of about 50 militiamen from Orange County joined Burgoyne's army at Saratoga Springs where they surrounded Lieutenant Colonel Nathanael Greene's garrison before launching coordinated assaults against him; three times he escaped without loss but on each occasion two soldiers were killed or critically wounded before finally capitulating on November 5th under heavy fire from Burgoyne's forces while still inside his own fortress - an event which has been cited as one of the turning points leading up to American independence. Afterward many Loyalists abandoned their posts throughout central New York due to fears that British retribution would follow should they ever open hostilities again against America.; In1794 Major General Benedict Arnold placed orders for military operations against Richmond based out of Kingston upon Hudson; however plans evolved to move these troops instead towards Albany which became known as "The Embargo Area."
