A storekeeper named George Gallup opened a store near present-day Interstate 95/I-95 bridge over the Susquehanna River in 1827; this store continued until 1908. A gristmill operated here from 1830 to 1840; it closed due to competition from mills farther upriver. From 1840 to 1850 two sawmills operated here: one at present-day Lewiston and one at Catskill where water power supplied the saws. A blacksmith shop also operated here during this time period. A post office called "Hudson" served Newburgh until 1861; it reopened as "Newburgh" on December 15 following annexation by Hudson Heights Township on April 24, 1860 (). After becoming an incorporated village on May 30th 1870 (), Newburgh had its own police department which remained until 1975 when it merged with adjacent Village of Amherstville . On October 10th 1907 local doctor Harry Hahn performed surgery using only his handkerchief while driving down Main Street during a blizzard conditions caused by severe ice storms that had been rolling throughout much of Upstate NY
