After the war ended, most of these veterans returned home but a few continued to live in Newburgh until after World War II. One major industry that has been important in Newburgh since its early days is manufacturing; such items as shoes, radios, appliances, clocks and other household items are manufactured here today by companies such as Carrier Corporation and IBM (International Business Machines). In recent years there have been efforts to revive downtown businesses including development of an arts district centered around First United Methodist Church which opened in 2007/2008 and a new library facility which opened in 2013/2014. There also has been much redevelopment taking place within surrounding areas: examples include Stroudsburg on the east side of town (home to many high-end retailers) being redeveloped into mixed-use buildings featuring residential units as well as commercial space; Utica on the west side becoming home to several medical centers; all along Mohawk River becoming an increasingly developed epicenter for tech startups

Newburgh, New York is a small town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas Biddle in 1785. He and his family built a log cabin on the present site of the town on December 9th. The first post office in Newburgh was established in 1802. In 1809, the name of the town was changed to Utica after its incorporation as a village by Act of Legislature No. 24 of that year. In 1814-15, during the War of 1812, General Winfield Scott's army passed through Utica on their way to battle against General George Washington near Trenton NJ; while passing by, Scott ordered his troops to stop at Utica for refreshments and camp there for two nights before continuing their journey northeastward. In 1830, John Flagg erected an extensive flour millinery complex on Main Street which still stands today within blocks of where he originally located it (now known as Flagg Park). This facility would continue to be one of America's leading flour mills until it closed its doors for good in 1978 due to competition from international competitors such as those found in Japan and Korea. During World War II many soldiers who had been drafted into service were housed at Fort Niagara outside Buffalo until they could be sent home via railcar across Lake Erie (the only time this ever happened). After spending some time at Fort Niagara collection points along with other Soldiers from all over North America and Europe living bunks down among us poor folk we finally got our act together and I hope you can understand how patriotic we were back then! The last shipment went out just before Christmas 1944 so everyone must have been pretty excited but alaschristmas came and went without any presents! All Nipponese soldiers know that war isn't about gift Giving it's about Conquest! Anyway back toUtica...I guess we all learned something new or maybe something changed about life here since then huh? Who knows really but one thing’s for sure - Utica will always have a bit more history than most places around here ;)
