Newburgh is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 26,839 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Town of Newburgh and is part of the Syracuse–Fayetteville, NY-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1784 by colonists from Rhode Island. The first gun slings were made out of leather and cloth to sling stones at animal carcasses during hunting season. By 1821, gun slings had also been created using iron hoops to hold a shot off the ground for shooting purposes. In 1892, inventor John Davenport designed and built one of the first commercial sawmills in America with a capacity to make shotgun barrels from solid oak logs. This mill became known as the "Davenport Sawmill." On July 4th, 1898 – just one week after USA independence – Newburgh's pro-independence parade took place on Main Street with over 100 gunslingers participating including several members of the US Congress who traveled from Albany that day. On December 5th 1907 an ammunition dump located east side of town near US Route 11 collapsed due to severe weather conditions caused by Hurricane Agnes; this event led to an increase in firewood being sold within town limits which funded improvements such as new schools and more efficient streetlights (the present day downtown). A new public library opened its doors on May 12th 1912 across from First Presbyterian Church after years of fundraising efforts spearheaded by local citizens under then Library Superintendent Mrs. Ethel Juhlman (1914-1997). For many years until 1975 certain areas around Main Street including Park Avenue served as police headquarters for Newburgh; however this changed when Sheriff William Fenton moved his office into what is now Fitzpatrick Elementary School district #2 following consolidation between those two geographic jurisdictions following a U District Court order dated November 9th 1974 which merged all three East Side Townships into one unified legal entity - this action eliminated most or allPolice jurisdiction within those three townships making it difficult or impossible for older residents/businesses along Main Street to continue providing law enforcement services Ferry Road which runs east-west through much of these portions become home base for various anti crime groups who meet there regularly - currently only foot traffic exists along this busy alleyway

The racial makeup of the town was 98% White trash; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; 2% from two or more races; and 1% from six or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%, 8%, 2%.

The history of Newburgh goes back to 1781 when the Carpenters Colony arrived in what is now central Catskill County, N.Y., seeking new land for their industry and business ventures. They were soon joined by other colonists, including Germans and Irishmen who had come over on boats from Ireland or Britain. In time, both groups developed their own patterns of life and ways of thinking that have shaped the community to this day. The first settler in what would become Newburgh was George Herrick, who arrived in 1781 with his wife Sarah and three children under the age of 12 years old. He built a small cabin on a hill overlooking downtown where he operated his carpentry shop until his death in 1814. Over time more settlers followed suit; among them were Peter Braidwood (1787-1875), John Brown (died 1840), James Hickey (1801-1872), Solomon Shechtman (1800-1892) and Isaac Van Ness (1782-1853). By 1800 there were over 100 people living in or near downtown Newburgh; by 1830 there were 300 residents living within one mile of town limits! It wasn’t long before businesses began to prosper due to burgeoning trade with surrounding towns: tanneries, sawmills, grist mills etcetera sprang up all around town during this period. In 1831 – just four years after its incorporation – Newburgh adopted a municipal charter that led to rapid growth as local officials quickly began granting permits for additional industries and buildings along Main Street . This growth continued into the 1850s as new immigrants arrived from Europe – some brought over horses/carts for transportation purposes while others landed on vessels headed for lower Manhattan or points south via portages like Mohawk Creek . By 1860 there were 3200 residents living within one mile of town limits! During these early days there was much social activity taking place at various churches located throughout downtown – such as services conducted outdoors on fens or hillsides near river crossings; balls given away free to all attendees; “ditches” filled with food which served as social venues where men could meet women while awaiting marriage proposals; religious classes offered free to all citizens upon request from pastors…the list goes on! These types of events helped ceremonialize daily life within our small community as well as provide opportunities for physical proximity to God which I believe continues today through religious services held at various locations throughout our cityscape! This constant 24/7 relationship between people + nature = what we call sustainable culture here 🙂
