While still residing in Newburgh he married Catharine Bigelow (1796-1868), daughter of Samuel Bigelow (born 1760) who had been Sheriff of Orange County from 1792 until his death in 1836 and proprietor of a large tract of land southward along Third Street frompresent-day downtown Newburgh In 1830 John Grosse Jr.'s widow Catharine moved with her four children to Utica, Sicily where she soon found success as a teacher before returning to America with her family three years later and opening a school on Washington Square opposite the courthouse In 1833 John Grosse Sr.'s brother Nicholas closed his store at 3 High Street due to competition from two new stores open by Simon Ewing and Nathan Weems on Erie Canal Boulevard just north of Utica John Grosse Sr.,Catharine & their 4 children then moved back east to Utica for 3 years before coming back west again around 1840 On October 9th 1840 they reopened their store at 2 Commercial Place NW for about 5 months before moving back home permanently becauseUtica did not have an area available for them anymore . They were finally able to purchase lot #2 on Center Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue NW which they called "Grouse's Neck" after their dog that died while helping them move equipment when they first started out
