Over time, other pioneers came to live here and many shops and businesses were founded including: The Hermitage Hotel (now The Town Hall), Whitechapel Hardware Company (now part of Macy's), United States Post Office (later moved to another location), First National Bank and Trust Company, Manufacturers brewery (now brewing company Town Brewery), several churches including Christ Episcopal Church and Congregationalist Meeting House; as well as a number of grist mills that provided bread for local restaurants until prohibition halted production in 1933 Some notable buildings still standing include: The Hermitage Hotel, Whitechapel Hardware Company building, United States Post Office building #1-5 & 6-8 & 10-12 South Broadway; Manufacturers Brewery; First National Bank Building #6 North Broadway between 4th & 5th Streets; Christ Episcopal Church building on Market Street between 3rd & 4th Streets It should be noted that there are no remains or evidence remaining today of any structures erected prior to 1795 when most likely all that was left behind consisted of logs which have been either dismantled over time or simply left abandoned with no one ever bothering to take care of them In 1814 Indians destroyed much property within this area by burning barns, fences and homes creating what is now known as Indian Land east side of current Webster Avenue while west side became known as white land where farming continued until around 1830 when large tracts were grabbed up by absentee landowners seeking access to high grade farmland
