On July 15, 1674, the town of Newburgh was founded by settlers from Albany, New York. The town prospered until the American Revolution. During the Revolution, Newburgh sided with the British and was sacked by Patriot forces on April 19, 1775. In 1803, a post office was established in what is now Newburgh and remained in operation until 1861. The first school in what is now Newburgh was built in 1795. A second school building was erected in 1827 and remains standing today.

The town reached its peak popularity in 1910 when it had a population of 15,000 people. However, economic factors such as World War I (1914-18) and Prohibition (1920-33) brought about huge declines in population over time. Today, there are only 3,500 residents living within walking distance of downtown Newburgh proper; most activity takes place outside its boundaries. One significant event that took place during this decline was when demonstrations against prohibition turned violent on October 25th 1933 when an estimated 1,500 angry citizens gathered at City Hall early morning after hearing word thatakey items were being sold without permits On November 5th 1933 voters overwhelmingly passed an amendment to the Constitution forbidding general liquor sales within one thousand miles of any state capital or major city This law took effect on January 1st 1934

Newburgh is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,524 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County. The first permanent settler in what would become Newburgh was Nicholas Botting in 1785. In 1814, the township was formed from part of Clinton Township. The first post office in what would become Newburgh was established on October 11, 1824 by order of President James K. Polk; it closed on December 12, 1825 due to low postal patronage. The townsite that today includes much of downtown and most of the north side of the river (save for some small areas near historic Fort George) were laid out as part of Clinton Township on April 14, 1827 by Tryon Cuyler and John Davenport. They named it for General Robert Ewing Livingston who had fought for American independence during the War for Independence and had later served as Secretary of State under Ulysses S. Grant before becoming a Umpire in Reconstruction South America. In 1840, Daniel Webster became Speaker of the House of Representatives and soon after began efforts to improve transportation within his district which included building a ferry across the Hudson River In 1850 he also helped found this new community called Websterville which quickly became known throughout upstate New York as an agricultural center because its landowners could grow crops without worrying about pests or disease; they did so until Prohibition ended their monopoly over trade with Cuba in 1922).
