Newburgh, New York is a small town in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mohawk Valley region and is located on the southern border of Erie County. Newburgh was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1624 as a stop on the Great Lakes Trade Road between Albany and Buffalo. The area became part of Pennsylvania in 1776, and then became part of New York in 1785. In 1813, an act to establish a military post at present-day Newburgh passed without opposition from local residents but met with resistance from neighboring towns that felt they had been left out of development opportunities due to their distance from Albany and Buffalo. The first post office opened in 1814, and mail was brought into town by oxcart untilroads were built connecting it to both cities soon thereafter. The brick courthouse and jail were erected in 1826; both are still standing today and are considered contributing resources to the town's history. In 1828, Cyrus McCormick founded what would become one of America's leading agricultural companies through his McCormick & Company planting company; this led to increased trade between the two cities so much so that new bridges were needed to connect them squarely across Erie Canal (later known as Interstate 95). William Hylan developed an air compressor business here during World War II which led to some growth for the town after its official designation as "The Empire State" by Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1965 following annexation of Syracuse by New York City proper via eminent domain decree - also making Newburgh one of only three places withinNYC allowed by law to have its own public school system! An important early industrialist associated with Newburgh was George Washington Ladd who operated a flour mill on Third Street south from downtown until 1915 when he sold it for $1 million to James Jarrell Sr., founder of Jarrells Shoes Ltd.. At Ladd's death his son James Jr., took over operations while still maintaining ownership rights until 1971 when they were acquired by Pinnacle Coal Corporation who renamed it Pinnacle Coal & Coke Incorporated before selling it all off again in 1984-1985 finally becoming an independent company once again! All told there has been significant economic activity taking place throughout these years despite challenges faced such as asbestos exposure during manufacturing processes which has resulted in damage or even loss suffered over time including several nursing homes being forced closed due primarily because their property could not be salvaged beyond repair; however those challenges have never stopped Townspeople from coming together every year forribute festival parade down Second Street culminating with Mayor Lovely Warren thanking everyone prior thereto!
