Newburgh, New York is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 5,624 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Greene County and part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1784 by colonists who called it Northburgh on the south side of Niagara River. After Confederation in 1801, Newburgh became part of Erie County and then New York State. In 1930 it merged with the neighboring village of Auburn to form the new town of Auburn-Newburgh. The first years of American history were marked by skirmishes between Native Americans and white settlers over hunting rights and access to water supplies. Ammunition production began in 1784 when one group of colonists founded a store at what is now Northborough Landing on the north bank of the Niagara River. That same year saw another early ammunition factory established in nearby Cayuga Lake by Nicholas Greenough and his brother Nathanael Greenough Sr.. This company manufactured cannons and pistols for use against Native Americans during America's undeveloped frontier period. During America's Revolutionary War (1775-1783), ammunition demand was high due to fighting along both sides of the conflict before independence from Great Britain was gained. Ammunition mills were built throughout western New York as conflicts intensified including those located at Batavia on Seneca Lake (northwest corner), Schenectady on Mohawk Creek (southwest corner), Oswego on Ontario Creek (east border) and Kingston on Onondaga Creek (southwest corner). A total amount equal to 318 cannonballs were made from thirteen different types each day during that campaign! In addition to munitions manufacturing, other businesses such as glass blowers and tailors thrived during this time period; however Blacksmiths rapidly replaced them beginning around 1800 due to increased competition from artillery manufacturers abroad as well as advances in technological innovations like invigorated steelmaking which led to improved Cannonball shot quality beginning around 1800 also known as "pistol firing". Ammunition imports started declining beginning about 1800 because skilled labor costs became too prohibitively expensive with English industry becoming increasingly dominant worldwide after Factory Acts were passed aimed at suppressing British industry overseas resulting in mass unemployment within colonial societies across North America starting around 1795/96 following more than two decades since most British subjects relocated westward following their defeat at Saratoga Springs! This lack of reliable local labor resources caused many small farmers throughout western New York during this time period struggling unsuccessfully against increasing competition from largeeuers while wages remained stagnant or declined measurably even though land values rose significantly concurrent with overall economic growth!

Newburgh was founded by Dutch settlers in 1764 as a small trading post on the Erie Canal. In 1814, it became part of the United States and was renamed to honor General James Dearborn (1757-1810). Dearborn's victory over Great Britain at Battle of Bunker Hill helped make America an independent nation. The town experienced a prosperity period during the 19th century due to its location on the canal and its role as an industrial center for textiles, food processing, and shipbuilding. However, during World War I Newburgh was devastated by bombs dropped from American planes; many buildings were destroyed or damaged. After the war, business slowed down and poverty increased. In 1970, Newburgh joined with other communities in central Niagara County to formNiagara Falls Township. Today, Newburgh is home to several businesses that continue to play important roles in local economy: Central Canalside Paper Company (based in downtown), The Heritage Bank (a community bank), Park Place Realty (which owns and operates three large shopping malls across central Niagara County), Niagara Frontier Airlines Corporation (owned by Republic Airways Group), Asbestos Incorporated (), Buffalo Bills Football Club (),and two high schools - John F Kennedy High School () and Stonington-Erie High School (). The town was first settled in 1785 by Captain George Washington's family as part of what would become Albany County. In 1814, it became part of Onondaga County when that county was created from parts of Ontario and Monroe counties. In 1825, Newburgh became a town charter under its current name; it had been granted a charter by Governor Nicholas Biddle in 1819 but changed its name because some residents objected to "Newburgh" being used as an initialism for both Onondaga and Cayuga Counties (though this never happened). The original plat map shows only two buildings - a church and school - but by 1840 most residents had built homes or erected businesses within their own limits. The canal brought new life into Newburgh during its construction; many people who had once relied on agriculture now worked on the canalside mills which produced flour, paper products, rope and other goods manufactured along with lumber for buildings and other objects such as ships' masts. Business boomed thanks also to shipping services offered by canal companies such as Fulton & Greenough who transported goods upriver from Buffalo while leaving canalside warehouses loaded with finished items behind at Lockport so that transportation costs could be eliminated completely! In addition to economic growth there were also social changes over time: women began working outside the home starting in earnest in 1870s while black Americans started making themselves known through local political activism starting with Lucius Wright in 1881-82 after he organized a boycott against then-Governor Adolphus Quinn's plan for giving more land away at public auctions rather than purchase it from Native American landowners!
