Newburgh is a small town in northern New York, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is 7 miles (11 km) south of Niagara Falls and 23 miles (39 km) north of Syracuse. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Newburgh occurred on December 14, 1614 when Christopher Annandale and his group of settlers arrived from England on the Mayflower. At that time, the area was part of Albany County and its capital was Albany. The first recorded mention of the town occurs in 1701 when it was settled by George Washington's brother-in-law Nathanael Greene as a result of their land purchase from Sir John Johnson. On July 1, 1812, during the War of 1812, an engagement took place at Battle Creek between Patriot forces under General Horatio Gates and British forces under Major-General Robert Ross which ended with a heavy loss for both sides. As a result, many refugees fled to Newburgh where they were housed by local farmers until they could be resettled elsewhere. In 1827 there were only 2 people living in Newburgh proper while over 50% of its population lived in three villages located adjacent to it: Northfield (now Wellsboro), Southfield (now West Seneca), and East Seneca; these villages collectively formed what is now known as "The Village". Newburgh residents voted to incorporate as a village on November 5th 1830 after being lobbied by then Mayor Joby Clark who saw potential benefits such as easier transportation and business access that would come with having its own government entity rather than depending on outside sources for help with these matters. On November 10th 1830 incorporation became effective and today's municipal boundaries are based upon this originalTownship boundary which ran along Mohawk Road from Lake Ontario eastward to Lackawanna River just south of modern day Orange Street/Upper Market Street intersection near downtown; current boundaries extending slightly further north include portions including parts Of Schenectady County now within Broome County line before turning northeast towards Cayuga Lake; finally all remaining territory eastward past Peterboro includes much present day Delaware County line as well as portions currently included within Oneonta or Tonawanda Townships

Newburgh, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 14,716 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Erie County by land area. The name of the town comes from its location on the north bank of the Susquehanna River and its river trade connections with other surrounding towns. The first permanent settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas de Vere who arrived there in 1686. He founded a trading post on the south side of the Susquehanna River and named it Verestown after his ancestor, Nicholas de Verdun, who had settled in that area some time before. In 1795 Jameson and John Armstrong erected a gristmill on what is now Main Street, which became an important commercial center for central Erie County during this period. In 1814 Isaac Dowling organized a township from parts of Muskegon Heights and North Tonawanda Township (now part of Buffalo), which were adjacent to Verestown. The new township included much of what are now eastern Warren and western Orange counties as well as most of what are today's southeastern Erie and northwestern Niagara counties. Dowling also donated land to create an artificial lake that would provide water supply for his new township while also creating potential farmland east of Interstate 90 within its borders. The first mill on this property was built in 1824 and became one of the largest mills west of Michigan until it closed down in 1960 due to competition from larger mills near Pittsburgh. During World War II many thousands local men served their country both here at home as members of military units or through duty overseas; many later found success as entrepreneurs after returning home. Some notable individuals associated with Newburgh during this time include Gilbert Mead (founder and CEO Chase Manhattan Bank) who co-founded First Niagara Bancorp; Rudolph Giuliani (mayoralty candidate in 2002); Stewart Udall (senator from 1996-2006); Rick Santorum (presidential candidate 2012).
