In 1853, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented an airgun that he called the “Conte Gun.” The gun was a smoothbore firearm that used compressed air to shoot pellets. At first, the gun was only used for target shooting. However, because of its accuracy and simplicity, the Conte Gun soon became popular among farmers and hunters in Newburgh County. In 1854, John A. Campbell made a similar gun but with a breechloader design that allowed him to load more rounds into his gun quickly. Together, these guns helped spread hunting and target shooting around Newburgh County. The popularity of airguns eventually led to their development as firearms. In 1875, Frederick Waddell created the first gas-operatedairgun and it became very popular in America. He sold his Air Rifle Company to Samuel Colt in 1903. Colt began manufacturing pistols using this new technology and started calling his guns “Air revolvers” or simply “Revs”). Newburgh, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-New Rochelle metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas Seamus from Waterford County, Ireland who arrived on horseback in 1785. He and his family were the nucleus of the early community which prospered until 1814 when a fire destroyed much of downtown and left many homeless. In that year, United States Senator John Fenton purchased two lots on Main Street for $1,000 and began to build what would become one of America's most impressive civic landmarks - Fenton's Tower - later known as Exchange Place. Fenton played an important role in leading up to American independence and served as President George Washington's personal secretary during his first term (1789-91). After serving as U.S. Secretary of State under James Kieft (1802-13), he returned to Albany where he started his own law practice before dying in 1827 at age 80 years old. His wife Lucy also became an influential civic figure within her community over time – she served as president of the Ladies' Aid Society from 1821 to 1830, mayor from 1830 to 1840, and editor of The Republican from 1837 to 1840; both women were well-educated but had little political power at their peak due largely to their husbands' influence. In 1814, local resident Ebenezer Scudder built a gristmill onpresentday Falls Road just south of present day Main Street – this mill continued operation until 1896 when it was replaced by a more modern facility operated by Phelps Dodge Corporation based out Of Niagara Falls; today there are several remaining buildings associated with that period including Scudder's House which still stands and features its original flourishes; also noteworthy are Scudder's Millrace Ruins which although they no longer produce flour or other agricultural products still offer excellent views across Falls Road towards Ithaca etc.; all this activity has led some locals to callpresent day Newburgh "Scuddertown".
