The history of electrical tasers in New York City began with the use of stun guns by police officers in the early 1970s. In 1990, NYPD created a Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWTU) dedicated to using tasers as part of their policing strategy. This unit had previously been responsible for using pepper spray and shotguns while on duty.
