Stevens, one by John Giannini and one run by Abram Schieffer (the father of modern target Shooting). Over time Academy Rodman became an extremely successful business with branches throughout North America; it closed its doors in 1971. New Rochelle was named after the new town in upstate New York that was founded by Dutch settlers in 1624. The name is derived from the word "Rochester" which means a place where rockeyes grow. The first Europeans to settle in what is now New Rochelle were religious refugees from Holland who had fled during the Thirty Years War. In 1686, English colonists arrived and renamed the town after themselves, replacing the Dutch name. The English also built a courthouse and other buildings in the town. In 1807, New Rochelle became a part of Erie County, New York. In 1814, it became part of Albany County, New York until it was combined with Albany City in 1898 to form the current city of Albany. In 1861, when Buffalo opened its own airport and began offering air service to areas north of Rochester, New Rochelle began providing airport services. New Rochelle's economic history begins with its role as an agricultural center during the early 19th century. After years of being an agricultural community dependent on exports from Buffalo andehia (a small village near Rochester), farmers turned their attention to growing crops here and started importing grains from Europe at this time. By 1900, however, most agricultural production had ceased and manufacturing had taken over as the primarystay of the town's economy. During World War II both industry and agriculture became important staples of local economies as war-time production skyrocketed demand for goods such as munitions and food items essential to American soldiers fighting in Europe or Japan). As post-war reconstruction increased demands for jobs throughout all sectors of society following World War II there was overwhelming demand for housing stock in many towns across upstate New York so much so that prices for single family homes peaked between 1946-1948 at $50-$60/square foot (although these values have since fallen considerably). This boomtown atmosphere did not last long however; within 10 years most factories closed down due to competition from more established cities such as Syracuse or Portage Park – although some companies did remain active such as Research Triangle Park based Northrop Grumman Corporation which manufactures drones for military use). Today few remnants remain of pre-war businesses moored along waterfronts south of downtown; instead Downtown business districts are filled with high density apartment buildings dating back to at least 1968 while small strip malls line I-87 eastward towards Buffalo Niagara Airport
