New Rochelle, New York is a city in the Catskills region of Upstate New York, United States. The population was 15,823 at the 2010 census. Its name is derived from the Dutch word "Rochelle" meaning "a rise". It became an incorporated village on April 14, 1892. On February 17, 1898, it lost its charter as a village and became a town under the name of Rochester. On December 12, 1949 it regained its charter as a town and changed its name to New Rochelle. The town's first mayor was James Fenton McKnight.
