After his trip, Smith named one end ofLong Island's North Fork after him- this is also where Mount Prospect stands today- and called the other end Sugar Loaf because he had found large numbers of beaver there. In 1764, General James Wolfe defeated British forces at Saratoga Springs in upstate New York and brought great wealth back to Canada with him including vast amounts of lumber which he shipped downriver to Kingston (now Toronto) for shipment across the ocean. The town that developed around Saratoga Springs soon became known as Wolfe's Landing due to its proximity to that important military site
