New Rochelle, New York is a city in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 68,711 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in New York City and the ninth most populous municipality of Westchester County. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The town of Rochelle (alternative spelling: Rochlain) was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 on an island in what is now Newtown Creek near Rochelle Bridge. The name "Rochester" originated from a term used to describe these early settlers as "Roderickers" or "ROCHELS". In 1764, the town became part of Albany County when that county was created from portions of Andover and Saratoga counties. On March 14, 1785, Rochelle changed its form to New Rochelle after becoming one of five towns located east of Rochester along what is now I-87 and Broadway Avenue. In 1814–15, a group of colonists from Kingston who had removed to Rochelle decided to start their own village called Kingston Village which they named for themselves rather than for their original settlement site on an island off Kingston Harbor (now Middle Island). The first store opened in Kingston Village on December 12th 1814 by Hosea Cook and it continued operation until 1861 when it closed because there were no more customers because transportation improved so rapidly within new Erie County! In 1825–27 John Drummond erected a wharf on the then present site of Woodbridge Landing next to what is now Water Street between Main Street and East Main Street where he built his custom house still standing today - this would be his later home also known as Sunnyside House - angling became very popular here due to good water conditions! From 1830-1834 Drury raised chickens at his place which are credited with starting downmarket chicken production in this area; unfortunately however some salt separation technology did not arrive until about 1840s so these eggs may have been unsold! A post office was started at Woodbridge Landing in 1830 but failed due to lack of customers so it remained open as an inn until May 1st 1870 when it received its own ZIP code! Drury's Place continued operations as an inn into 1865 with rooms rented out until 1867 when the landowner donated all remaining property including Drury's Place and surrounding lots to local schoolchildren who founded their own public school that year; that school remains open today as Oneonta High School

New Rochelle, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 24,873 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in the county after White Plains. The name is derived from Dutch markets for rye and other grains, "Rochel" meaning a rise or hillock and "helle" (place) or "hut" (cottage). Founded by English farmers in 1624 on high ground between the Ossining Creek and Saratoga rivers as a small trading post named Wicacoqua, New Rochelle grew rapidly during the 17th century as an agricultural center with large estates of corn, beans, wheat and other crops. In 1685–87 two villages were established: New Rochelle on both banks of Ossining Creek east of town and Northampton to its north on High Road west of town. In 1814 part of what is now Northampton became part of the Town of Westchester; it was annexed by New Rochelle in 1825. During the American Revolution one hundred men gathered at Wicacoqua Point on Long Island Sound to offer their services as militiamen under General John Sullivan against British forces commanded by George Washington. On July 22nd they set sail from Rhode Island for Staten Island but never arrived because they were intercepted by Admiral Graves's squadron off Sandy Hook on July 25th while sailing southbound towards Block Island Sound. A group led by Captain Samuel Brown reached Providence about midnight on July 26th after journeying through stormy seas for three days without food or water aboard their ship Constitution which had been sunk off shore near Sandy Hook that morning when she struck bottom while trying to free her crewmembers who had been takenprisoner during the Battle of Bunker Hill less than two weeks earlier. After making land at Newport News near Hampton Roads they continued upstream until reaching Newton Bridge where they disembarked their supplies and equipment before continuing upriver to join Sullivan's army at Saratoga Springs that night under cover of darkness.(1) The new settlers arriving in this area were drawn primarily from England but also Scotland, Ireland and Germany among others.(2) They built sturdy log homes with galleries around them which still remain extant today; these homes served as social clubs for farmers' wives who raised livestock and fished in nearby waterways such as Ossining Creek which formed part of then known as Toryscott Manor.(3) This area later became known as rural Westchester County because much farmland was bought up byancopperminers during Reconstruction following America's Civil War(4). Much technological innovation took place here too including early telephone service (1876), first electric lightbulbs (1879), autos (1910), refrigerators (1913), dental appliances (1927), jet airplanes (1945)), digital watches/bracelets/amulets/pendants/earrings etc.(5) Early businesses included Hecker & Snyder hardware store(now Macy's department store), Jardine Coalhauling Co., bakery(now Dunkin' Donuts coffee shop), First National Bank(now HSBC banknorthwest branch.), Hatchery Trust Company(later Realtor Trust Company,) Pfeiffer Glasses company & more...Today many descendants continue these old families' businesses including some 60%owned business being run by women...While Post Office moved several times over its lifetime due to expansions into Oswego County (& outside NY state altogether!), all delivered mail using horses wagons until 1875 when a locomotive broughtmail via train from NYC thru Canandaigua Falls....It should be noted that there have been occasional moves within boundaries since then...In 1870s entire Bronx left NY for greener pastures!
