It was renamed "New Rochelle" after Queen Anne's Speech (dated February 17, 1702), which mentioned that all future towns must have their nameakes appended to it - this being done because Rochester had been given the nickname of "the old capital of England". The first settler to arrive in what is now Putnam County was Nicholas Fanning on October 14, 1686. He and his brother-in-law Joseph Warren built a log cabin on present day Main Street just south ofpresent-day Roosevelt Road. The first meeting for the town committee took place on November 3rd and they elected Nicholas Fanning as chairman. William Kieft founded Section 10 on December 5th also known as White Plains Road (now called Kieft Avenue). In 1701 John Longworths patented a piece of land that included present day Old Saybrook and adjoining tracts including sections 11 & 12 which he called Northampton Hill; section 13 along present day First Avenue between Nutting Boulevard & Elmhurst Avenue; section 15 between Nutting Boulevard & Sleepy Hollow Drive; section 16 near post office forming part of what are now Park Ave., Church Ave., Newtown Way and South Kingstown Roads; tracts #1 & 2 northwest corner of Lake Ontario with tract #3 extending thence eastward to Whatcom River Inlet; tracts #4 east side Of Lake Ontario opposite lots numbered 4 thro' 9 inclusive which he call Middleburgh Heights Including Northwest Corner lot number 20 acres only bounded by line described Above extending northerly from said lot line aforesaid easterly 99 feet above water level or promiscuous meadow upon whosoever drove thereon before February 1st next A public record thereof having been made by George Downing oneof its original proprietors . “….and I doe further Declare That I did not build any house here but my BrotherNicholas Fannings did…..” In 1709 Daniel Defoe moved into what is now Present Day Putnam Valley from London with his family. His son Robert Defoe followed him about two years later when he purchased an acreage north of where Main Street meets Roosevelt Road for $2 per acre from John Graves Simcoe . These transactions led to neck Deep Cove from Hudson Bay becoming part of New Rochelle proper when Boston annexed it back into Massachusetts in 1835.. In 1710 Captain Elisha Peake bought three rods (about 21/2 acres) at the mouth of Brocken Pond for $22 per mile square from Samuel Johnson who had earlier bought three rods upstream at same spot for $10 per mile square from Capt Benjamin Hudspeth .....What we nowcall Putnam Valley began farming about 1800 when Major General Nicholas Perknyt organized a militia company outfitted with Indian cornets under command of Major James Fitzgibbon……....This early village had residents such as Reverend Jonathan Edwards who preached at Greenbush Tavern until it burned down in 1805…………………By 1840 over 80%of all agricultural production came from raising chickens, pork etc….. “….but little could be grown hereabouts due to lack either sunlight or moisture…..”

New Rochelle is a hamlet in the town of Rochelle, on the southern border of Westchester County, New York. It was first settled by Dutch people in 1636. The name "New Rochelle" originated from a place called Roqueforta, in what is now France. The original settlers were Huguenots who had fled religious persecution in France during the French Revolution. The first post office at New Rochelle was set up in 1755, and became known as Rocheforte after its founder. In 1806, the town was renamed for American General George Washington, who had been born and raised here. After he died in 1799 at age 81 years old, his widow Martha Washington desired to rename her husband's home "Mount Vernon". However, before she could do so, Congress placed a veto preventing any change to the name of Mount Vernon until they received new information about him. As a result, Washington's memory continued to be honored by successive generations of Americans through various names including Mount Vernon (1812-1815), Arlington (1846-1868), and current day Arlington National Cemetery (1914-2015). In 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Dallas TX., violence broke out throughout America as mobs looted homes and businesses across the Southwestern United States unhappy with his slain president's policies. One such instance took place in New Rochelle where dozens of business owners were burned down during this period known as the Great Fire of 1866
The town of New Rochelle, located in the southern part of Monroe County, was founded by Dutch settlers in 1664. The area now known as New Rochelle was originally a part of Westchester County. In 1697, the town became a part of Rochester, New York. It remained an agricultural village until 1858, when it became a city.
