In 1857, Amos Kendall donated a new rifle stock to the townhall in memory of his father-in-law, Dr. Samuel Wadsworth. The Wadsworth Rifle Stock Committee decided to install this stock on one of Mount Vernon's trees rather than just give it away as a gift because they believed that it would remain within the town's firearm culture for future generations. It wasn't until after World War II that scope mounts began appearing on streetlights in New York City; however, these mounted units continued to be used primarily for target shooting at local ranges until well into the 1990s. Mount Vernon residents continue to usescope mounts today not only for target Shooting but also duck hunting and other outdoor activities due to their familiarity with them from years past. In fact, one recent resident even built himself his own home equipped with a scope mount so he can keep track of his ducks while living inside!
