Mount Vernon was settled in 1795 by John Adams and his wife, Abigail. The town site was purchased from the Lenape tribe for $2,500. Adams named the town Mount Vernon because of its dominating position on the hilltop. A school was built in 1802 and replaced by a courthouse in 1809. The first sheriff of Mount Vernon was George Washington’s personal aide, Major John Singleton Copley. The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century as a center for wool production and trade with other towns in New York State and Pennsylvania. Manufacturing businesses were established in the early 20th century, including a flour mill, a printing press, and an armory. However, economic development stalled after World War II due to reductions in wool production and commuter traffic to nearby Buffalo and Yonkers. After moving to Mount Vernon from New York City in 1955, Mayor Emanuel created an elected city council that has directed much of the community’s recent growth since he took office two years ago. With new housing developments planned for both east and west sides of downtown (the former industrial area is now home to more than 100 small businesses), Mount Vernon is expected to experience even more population growth over the next several decades – whether through annexation by neighboring cities or driven by natural processes such as climate change or land management changes caused by suburban sprawl across East Harlem.

In 1784, three Scots-Irish men - John Armstrong, Allan Cunningham and David Robertson - prospected for land near present day Springdale Junction on the north side of Mohawk Lake east of Albany; they founded what would become Clearwater Township on April 21st that year. That same year, American Revolutionary War veteran General George Washington purchased approximately 7 square miles (18 km2) northeast of Springdale Junction from David Robertson for £350 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) of woodland; this purchase made him proprietor of all that later became known as Upper Arlington Township including present day Springdale Junction and much of present day Albany county west thereof including most parts now within Albany city limits between Prospect Heights on the northwest corner and Southside Terrace on Livingston Avenue southeastward towards Interstate Highway 95 (now State Street), where he lived with his family until 1800 when he moved into nearby White House Creek Manor which served as both residence and business office until taken down following his death less than two years later at age 90 . In 1792, the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War and awarded New York to Great Britain. The town became a Crown colony and was renamed London after its new capital.
