The first gun target in Mount Vernon was a simple post, erected on the lawn of the George Washington home in 1792. The target was replaced by a more modern three-gun replica in 1824. In 1825, the first National Rifle Association convention was held at the old Federal Hall, and Gunnery Sergeant Ebenezer Cooke set up a dummy cannon to test new ammunition. The association continued to use targets at their meetings until 1870. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt authorized the installation of an American flagpole from which shooters could shoots arrows into it from across Long Island Sound. A year later, Congress granted $5,000 for the erection of another flagpole on Capitol Hill. That same year saw the first rifle match between America and Great Britain at Queensboro Field near New York City; America won 5 out of 7 matches. In 1916, Mount Vernon became one of ninety-eight United States towns to sign an agreement with NRA that allowed unrestricted carry of handguns among its citizens without permits or registration requirements. As early as 1922, Mount Vernon had been hosting annual NRA conventions that attracted international delegates including former Prime Ministers David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. Mount Vernon also played host to World War II's largest airshow when over 150 planes were displayed at Heckscher Field beginning on July 29th 1940 through August 2nd 1940 inclusive (over 20% of all combat losses during WWII).
Mount Vernon is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 10,820 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Mount Vernon was laid out by George Washington in 1788 and named for his father-in-law, James Monroe. Mount Vernon is located on the southern border of Westchester County and borders Nyack to the north and Rochelle to the east. The first settlers were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild game near present day Mount Vernon. In 1664, Sir Edmund Andros built a small fort on what is now known as State Road 9 south of present day Mount Vernon (now Glen Rock Avenue). He also founded Andros College which later became SUNY Purchase University. In 1788, Washington laid out an area called "Mount Vernon" around his father-in-law's home on Academy Hill in Clarendon Township where he had been born into a wealthy family some years earlier. Washington named it after James Monroe because he felt that James Monroe would be more likely to support American independence than any other personage in America at that time. The first house built on Mount Vernon was designed by British architect Christopher Wren and built c 1801–02 for Colonel John Montresor Sr., one of President George Washington's close friends from London during their exile there during the Revolutionary War period (the Monroes lived just outside Philadelphia then). Mrs. Montresor served as Lady Warden of Westminster Abbey until her death in 1814; her husband continued to live there until his death in 1827.) Mount Vernon is a historic town in York County, New York, United States. Settled by fur traders in the early 17th century, its growth as a white-collar city began in the 20th century. The population of Mount Vernon was 14,151 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on July 6, 1686 by Captains Jamesway and Lawrence on land granted to them by King George II of England for his military campaigns against French and Native Americans. The town's first settler was Peter Kieft. In 1784, John Dickinson moved to Mount Vernon from Brunswick Township (now Delaware). He built what is now called Dickinson House on present-day Washington Street. In 1807, David Thompson arrived with his family from Canada and set up shop in what is now Kemptown Square. By 1830, when Buffalo's population reached 25,000 people and Niagara Falls' population reached 30,000 people,[1] it had become apparent that a larger city would be necessary if both towns were to thrive together as one community. The two cities merged on October 15 of that year when they became one municipality under the name of Buffalo.[2] During its heyday as a white-collar city during World War I and II, Mount Vernon boasted some of the most prestigious employers in America including General Motors[3], DuPont[4], Chase Manhattan Bank[5], IBM[6]), Chrysler Corporation[7], Ford Motor Company[8],[9],[10],[11],[12],[13]) and Wistar School (later Penn State University).[14] However its economic success slowed down after the war while other municipalities grew rapidly; today Mount Vernon's economy relies mainly upon agriculture which has made it an important center for rural education around Niagara Falls area
The first white European settlers in what is now Mount Vernon, New York were Irish Protestants who came to the area in the late 18th century. The area was part of the British Colony of Ulster and was under English control until 1688. In 1764, George Washington was born on this site. He was the first president of the United States and died in office in 1797.
