There is no question that the gun swivel has a long and proud history in Mount Vernon, New York. Mount Vernon is a historic home located at Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York. It was built in 1790, and is a large, three-story red brick structure with a gable roof. It has been modified several times, including its current form as a national Historic Landmark. The first European settlers in the area now known as Mount Vernon were led by Captain John Smith and his party of men from Rhode Island in 1614. They traveled up the Hudson River to what is now New York City and then explored the land around present-day Mount Vernon. The first colonists arrived here on October 14, 1624 when they landed near what is now Northampton Beach on Long Island Sound. Captain John Smith's group founded the town of Jamestown on July 4th, 1626 about north of where Mount Vernon now stands. However, because of Indian attacks it was difficult for them to maintain their settlement and within two years they had abandoned it due to war with Native Americans. In November 1629 English colonist Robert De Witt erected a fortification known as Fort Orange at the junction of Upper Hudson Bay and Long Island Sound in what is today Yonkers. Dutch colonists soon began arriving here too and by December 1st that year both English and Dutch settlements had merged into one newtown called Albany which became capital of New Netherland colony after its establishment in 1536. In April 1639 English colonists took over control of Albany from the Dutch following a series of wars fought between them over control of this important site on Manhattan island (now Brooklyn). After years of struggles between English/Dutch forces for control over this strategic location along the southern tip of Manhattan island (modern day Queens), Albany eventually fell to England in May 1645 during King George III's War or Engagement at Saratoga Creek (June 17th – September 25th). At this point all Dutch possessions in North America were surrendered except for Staten Island (now part of Brooklyn) which remained under occupation by the Dutch until succession by England following Queen Anne's accession to power in 1702 cementing British Control over America coast-to-coast. 1
The first European settlers in what is now Mount Vernon, New York arrived in 1624. The town was founded by the Dutch and named after Prince Maurice of Orange, who had come to America as a refugee from the Netherlands. The town became a part of New York City in 1785.
