In 1801, when President James K Polk issued Executive Order 9102 calling for all citizens to register within five days of arrival any new immigrants who had not yet been naturalized as Americans (a requirement under Mexican American migration policies), more than 8500 people came from Europe to work on farms near Mount Vernon before registration closed two weeks later on October 25th due to lack of space. Many Europeans were already familiar with North America through travels made while working as indentured servants or gold seekers in earlier centuries; however they were still apprehensive about living among Native Americans whom they considered savages or primitive beings incapable of civilized behavior One reason why so many European immigrants landed at Staten Island instead of Manhattan was that there was no suitable landing spot on Staten Island until 1814 when Governor John Tryon selected Richmond Point as the site for an military post known as Fort Totten after General Anthony Wayne's victory over Spanish forces at Monterrey Bayou de las Aguas Californias near present day Midtown Brooklyn In 1821 King George IV granted exclusive rights to build shipsyard and wharfage along both shores of our harbor at Fresh Kills Neck Road between Crown Heights and Park Slope This event marks one step forward across hundreds since English traders established trade hereabouts with natives beginning circa 1600 AEDT
