Mount Vernon, New York is home to the world's only gunsmithing center. The city was founded by the Dutch in 1624 and became a colony of British America in 1783. At its peak, Mount Vernon had a population of over 50,000 people. The Gunsmiths' Shop at 45 Broadwalk was one of the largest and most prestigious shops in colonial America. In 1802, John Brown's Raid took place here and it is said that many individual firearms were lost during the raid. The Gunsmiths' Shop closed in 1857 but reopened in 1865 as the first rifle store in New York City. It continued to be a leading firearms dealer until it closed again in 1903. After World War I, gun sales declined and the shop eventually went out of business. However, it has been restored several times and currently operates as an historical museum open to the public.

Mount Vernon is a historic home located in the town of Mount Vernon, Morris County, New York. It was built about 1795 and is a two-story, Ionic Revival style stone structure. It has a gable roof and is surrounded by an octagonal portico. The house features eight large, stately rooms on five floors. The first European to visit the area now known as Mount Vernon was Giovanni Fontana in 1624. In 1795, Captain John Smith and his crew stopped at the site for lunch before continuing their journey up the Hudson River. They were so impressed with the beauty of the area that they ordered Governor Tryon to investigate what lay behind these high hills. Tryon discovered that this land had been purchased from Native Americans by George Washington and his family some years earlier. By 1802, when Congress authorized erection of a national capital on Manhattan Island, it had become clear that Mount Vernon would be the ideal location for such an office because of its geographical advantages: it situates itself along major rivers and canals so that it could easily provide transportation links between New York City and Albany; its commanding view of Manhattan; and its strategic location within easy reach of both Albany and Philadelphia (the originalcapital). In 1807, Congress appropriated $10,000 to erect a guardhouse at Mount Vernon for future use as an arsenal should war ever break out in America over control of Canada or Mexico. Work began on this building in 1809 but only ended after General Andrew Jackson's victory in 1799 over British forces at Saratoga Creek caused Britain to cede all North American colonies except Quebec to America under the Treaty of Ghent. With each new acquisition came increased pressure on Mount Vernon's resources which led to problems with access road construction throughout much of Reconstruction Era America until finally drained by World War II efforts After years of neglect by successive presidents during World War II efforts were resumed culminating with President Harry S Truman dedication of restoration project starting in 1948 which completed final touches in 1971 Today mountvernons permanently closed are open only sporadically as research labs
The first settlers on Mount Vernon, New York were the Dutch in 1624. They named their settlement "Nieuw Amsterdam." The English took over in 1664 and renamed it Mount Vernon. New Yorkers built the original fortifications around 1715-1720. The new fortifications included a moat and walls of brick, stone and mortar.
