Today, Mount Vernon functions as a research library open to the public on weekdays from 9am to 4pm and Sundays from 12pm to 3pm.

The Doctor's House was built by Dr. Nicholas Van Cortlandt as his homeopathic clinic on what is now Park Avenue in 1785. He later moved to this house and served as its doctor until his death in 1802. The Poor House was built by Judge Robert Livingston in 1786 as part of a public works project to relieve overcrowding on Flatbush Road in Upper Manhattan. The building served as a poorhouse until it was sold to John Davenport in 1802 for use as the State Capitol Complex, which it remains today. The Nurse's School was founded in 1802 by Dr. David Ogden Stewart to provide Nurses for the State Department of Healthpurely out of need due to diseases that were then rampant throughout New York City such as smallpox and yellow fever lounging about among its inhabitants .
