Mount Vernon is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. It is located east of Buffalo on the north side of the Niagara River. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon was named for George Washington's father-in-law, James Monroe. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mount Vernon were French traders and missionaries who landed there in 1614. They built a small trading post known as Fort Duquesne which they abandoned in 1618 when war with France erupted. A Jesuit mission was established at nearby Monongahela in 1624 and it burned down in 1702 after becoming involved in a power struggle between Scottish colonists and French Canadians. In 1763, the British conquered Canada and renamed it Upper Canada; Mount Vernon became part of this new province. In 1805–1808 George Washington served as commander of American forces during the War of 1812 against Great Britain; he Laurel Hill Cemetery (now Arlington National Cemetery) is located near his home there. In 1828, Congress created Buffalo National Park which included much of what is now Mount Vernon village except for some land that was annexed by the city limits of Buffalo in 1888. After years of wrangling over boundaries between park and city limits, Buffalo finally annexed all but two blocks from Mount Vernonvillage to form its current borders on May 1st, 1912; this left only one block within the village boundary still unincorporated (the latter being within present day Arlington). The original settlers arrived here soon after discovery of what would become Erie County by Captain John Butler in 1794 while exploring along the Niagara Frontier looking for fur trade opportunities opening up due to increasing traffic along that route through Pennsylvania into Ontario by way of Toronto then Montreal then Quebec City etc... These early arrivals were followed quickly by others drawn to available farmland and new water supplies generated by draining wetlands drained around Huron Lake - alluvial fansderived from ancient ice fields lay just below present day hills lining Interstate 80 outside modern day Buffalo NYWRF/USGS)... The Village began forming with about 20 families clustering around Oneida Creek Lock Beaver Dam before 1800 under Captains John Dutton & Samuel Morse... By 1800 most had moved out followingorgeeepingsandthefreshwaterdeposits underlyingmuchofwhatisnowMountVernon... By 1803 most had moved out following settlement sites along Chenango River estuary southwest to Battle Creek where they founded Ballston Spa.. Most settled around Oneida Creek lock Beaver Dam where Captains John Dutton & Samuel Morse built their first house on July 10th 1800 building an enlarged version still standing today called "Oldcastle" also now listed on NY State Historical Marker #9017

Mount Vernon, located in the town of Westchester County, New York, is a historic home and plantation complex that was once one of the most magnificent examples of Federal architecture in the United States. The Mount Vernon estate was founded by George Washington and his family in 1792. It served as their official residence from 1795 until 1800. In 1801, Washington sold the estate to his wife Martha Washington for $5 million. The following year, she donated it to the National Academy of Sciences as a research institution. Mount Vernon has been used as a center for scientific studies ever since. Significant incidents at Mount Vernon include the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th,1776; John Adams's funeral service on October 5th,1826; and Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration on January 20th, 1933. The property contains more than 40 acres (16 hectares) of land including several gardens and an extensive system of roads and paths leading to it from throughout Westchester County. Many portions were designed by Scottish architect David Livingstone while others were built by General James Knyphausen or Captain John Watts. The main house was completed in 1799-1800 with additions made over time including a large ell (an attached wing). Other buildings on campus include: President's House (1797-1800), Mrs. Washburne's House (1798-1802), Mr. Adams's Residence (1797-1800), Drury Lane Schoolhouse (c 1801-1802), Montresor Castle (built c 1805–07), Hermitage Lodge (/ˈhɛrɪtjæn/ or /ˈxɜːrnᵻk/, also known as Hermitage Forest (/ˌherɪtiːk/) and Gaylord Manor (/aʊdzi/)) – associated with Mount Vernon since its founding – White House Presidential Mansion (/wɔŋi ˈpælmənti/, also known as Executive Mansion) – first occupied by George Washington after his residency at Montresor Castle—First Lady Volunteer Ambulance Barracks (/bærniˈkwærl/)—Courtauld Institute art gallery—National Military Museum—John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum—Newark Liberty Ship Yard
