In 1736, he established a gunsmithing school on his estate, which soon became known as Mount Vernon Arsenal. This factory was used to create many of America's earliest firearms including pistols and rifles. Over time, other influential figures within Mount Vernon also purchased guns from local barrelmakers. These individuals included President George Washington himself, as well as General John Burgoyne and Secretary James Kieft. It was during this period thatMount Vernon Armory began producing some of America's most iconic firearms including the rifle that would become known as the " Continental Rifle."

Mount Vernon, New York (1626-1792), also known as The Hermitage and Mount Vernon Estate, is a historic home located at The Hermitage in Mount Vernon, Ulster County, New York. It was built about 1626 by George Washington and his wife Martha Dandridge Custis for their own use. It has been the home of the President of the United States since 1793. The original house was built on an excavation that started in 1624 under direction of Governor Thomas Dongan to provide land for Roman Catholics to build churches on in Ulster County. Washington's first wife, Martha Dandridge Custis, helped finance construction of the house and it was finished in 1629. In 1793, following the death of George Washington and his second wife Catherine Carver, Mount Vernon became the exclusive property of John Adams and his family. Adams used it as a summer home until he sold it to James Kephart in 1802. Kephart turned it into a pension office before selling it to Horace Greeley in 1868. In 1906-7, Mount Vernon was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

George Washington first acquired part of what is now Mount Vernon from Baron Von Steuben for $4200 in 1784. In 1814 he renamed it Mount Vernon after himself and his wife Martha Washington—the first U.S president's wife—in order to emphasize their shared ancestry with British royalty. Today only 5% of original Mount Vernon remains: most of which is devoted to visitor attractions such as its gardens and orchards
TheMount Vernon Cemetery is located on the north side of Mount Vernon, between Washington Square and Broadway. It was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his wife Martha. The cemetery contains over 1,000 graves of American presidents and other national figures.
