Mount Vernon is a historic home located at New York City, New York. It was built in 1701 and is a two-story, gothic style building constructed of fieldstone. It has a square footprint and is surrounded by a stone wall. The interior features large double doors with panels of highly polished wood. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mount Vernon were Dutch traders in 1624 who named it "Nieuw Amsterdam" (New Amsterdam). In 1701, Governor George Washington leased land from the Lenape Indians for $200 per year and began work on the home which would eventually become one of America's most prestigious homes. The first settlers arrived in 1705 and soon began constructing the complex that includes today's main house, barns, gardens, dairy buildings, workshops, and more. By 1802 it had been extended to include an additional three stories and became known as "The White House". In 1814–1815 President James K. Polk visited Mount Vernon as part of his tour of America and wrote about his experiences in a letter to his wife Anna: "I spent last night at Mount Vernon - one of the most interesting places I ever visited - comprising one side of an immense quadrangle or court enclosed by high walls ornamented with beautiful arches . . . There are no less than six massive gates opening into this court from different parts ; each gate alone cost £2 2 6/8d." One can imagine how much pleasure these visits must have brought both presidents and their families! Today Mount Vernon continues to be used as a presidential retreat; during Barack Obama's final term he kept office there while travelling through Europe. Today only two floors remain of original structure; however its importance cannot be overstated considering it was originally intended as a presidential palace complete with grand staircases and rooms capable accommodating up to twenty presidential guests at any given time! Located just blocks away from Wall Street where so many deals were made during early American history it is clear that not only did President Washington need space for his own private family but also for state functions such as hosting military commanders or coronavirus inspections! Today visitors can gain insight into how Presidents lived back then by touring some of the areas still preserved including the bedroom where George Washington slept after winning election in 1800 – complete with original furniture!

Mount Vernon was built by George Washington in 1792 as a plantation house on the east side of Manhattan. It served as the presidential mansion from 1800 to 1801 and again from 1825 to 1829. The first president, James K. Polk, used Mount Vernon as his official residence from office until his death in 1909. After Polk's death, the property passed through several hands before it was purchased by John D. Rockefeller in 1912 for $2 million. Rockefeller used Mount Vernon as his private home, but also made it available for public tours and ceremonies. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson dedicated Mount Vernon to American history with a plaque that reads "In memory of our Presidents George Washington and James K. Polk." The current operator of Mount Vernon is the National Park Service which operates it under the auspices of the United States Government.
In 1795, George Washington was born on Mount Vernon in what is now Fairfax County, Virginia. The home that Washington and his family lived in for the majority of their lives has been preserved and is now a museum. In 1801, Washington moved to New York City and started a new life as the first U.S. president. He used his presidential office to promote democracy and strengthen American interests abroad. The city of New York also became an important center for business and culture during his presidency.
